Didn't see any threads on this, so I figured I'd make one. Sounds like good news all around.

Highlights:

- Most of the oil has either evaporated, dispersed, or been removed.

- Flow of oil is still stopped, and "static kill" - the pumping of mud to push oil back into the reservoir - was a success.

- No evidence of any large quantities of oil as of yet unaccounted for.

- Amount of fishing grounds closed is down to 24% from 36% as tests on fish shows little cause for concern.

- The relief well - the final, permanent solution - is still expected to be finished by the 15th.

- Estimates on how much oil spilled places it at around 4.9 million barrels.

- Still uncertain regarding the full impact this has had on the Gulf ecosystem.

According to estimates, the single biggest contributor to the disappearance of the oil was the air and water around the Gulf.

So I think we clearly need to wage war against the thieving air and water and get our oil back where it belongs. :x.

Yes, fish drink oil to produce fish oil, similarly to how plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Like when you feed babies oil and they produce baby oil.

I'm still concerned about the environmental impact. I heard somewhere that the spill could potentially lead to the extinction of the blue fin tuna and chilean sea bass, and if there's one thing I won't stand for it's the needless slaughter and waste of delicious, delicious animals.

It's good that it's going down, but now I think they should be worrying a lot on the effects of the ecosystem. Also be interested to see what the effect of the many microbes will have on the area (the ones that "ate" the oil).

So basically, the earth took care of that which came from the depths of the earth. Have to say I'm glad that this is happening; it's surprising but encouraging.

More or less, yes. I saw it theorized once that, odd though it may sound, the spill couldn't have happened in a better time and place, as it's the middle of summer and in a warm climate, which unlike the Exxon Valdez's location in the middle of a frigid area is quite conducive to natural cleanup of things of this sort. It would appear that that theory has been proven correct, as much of the cleanup has been entirely natural in nature (har har).

i read an article saying that most of it was eaten by microbes that naturally in the gulf, microbes much like what the gov and bp should have been using instead of those highly toxic disbursements.

There certainly will be long term effects caused by this spill that we'll be hearing about for years to come, but at least things recently have been going very well in terms of the cleanup. I thought that oil would be sitting out there for a long while, but now it looks like most of it is gone (from the surface anyway, I realize some has moved underwater where it can still do some damage.)

Sorry but this sets off every bell I have at disposal in my cyncial old head. That there is no mention of what happened to the oil that sank out of sight to the bottom of the ocean, no mention of methane leaks, no clarification regarding long term results of the spill, that petroleum is still the principle energy source of the planetand that BPis now "scaling back"its very expensive clean up, leaves me stone faced.

I do hope the region and the sea life can eventually be restored and that this is a wake-up call to every company that has to do with Oil rigs. I know the companies here have lifted the safety and improved even further the way things are done when working and pumping for oil on a Oil rig.

That is great news, and it goes to show that this planet can do just fine taking care of itself without us dumping tons of chemicals into the sea to help. However, I am still unconvinced that the damage and effects of this disaster wont be felt for years to come.

That's what happens when you pour toxic chemicals in to the ocean to clean up the oil.
