Big news if you're into space, the culmination of an 8 month journey. The landing was entirely independently achieved as radio signals take 11 minutes to reach Earth so if something went wrong there was nothing they could've done.

There will apparently be video of the landing available soon along with photos.

Amazing times.

NASA's got it on a roll with these Mars thingies. That thing is carrying a helicopter rover, too. First powered flight on another world coming up soon.

Annnnnnnnnd now I feel like firing up some KSP. I actually rigged up a skycrane type thingy to get my big ass rover to The Mun what since parachutes won't work. Was tons of fun.

Behold the Kerbelwagon:

@br0kenrabbit: hahaha I've been playing the shit out of KSP for the past few days just because of this.

It's my favorite game I am terrible at. I can get to orbit and....that's about it. I haven't even rendezvoused in orbit yet, which sucks because I have such designs for space stations and such hahaha.

It's still fun though. Not sure if you like city-builder/management games, but Per Aspera is a lot of fun as well.

Anyway, on topic: exciting times! I heard the camera on that rover is amazing, I can't wait to see some amazing pictures. Can't wait to hear about what we discover.

Perseverance has begun its long journey of solitude in the Jezero Crater. Hopefully, it'll make some breakthrough discoveries in the next 10 years or so.

Can't wait for the aerial shots. We need more and more of these types of missions.

Download Mechjeb. It'll make life quite a bit easier.

Per Aspera looks interesting, hadn't heard of it before. Thanks for the heads up.

As for the Perseverance, it has a microphone, so we can hear all the birds chirping.

@mrbojangles25: I’d like to play KSP as well but it’s damn tough. I can never manage to get into orbit.

First shots released!

The Perseverance being lowered in the crane stage said to be about six feet above the Martian surface, seconds from touchdown:

Really incredible to see another world in such detail. Can't wait for the videos and especially some aerial shots from the drone high above the surface.

@horgen: the Rover? I think about the size of a car, the drone, not too sure.

Just how much the government is spending on these expeditions. Are they really spending billions just for rock photos?

The video is spectacular.

Edit: The mediocrity and shortness of sight of some people in threads like this never fails to impress me. Thank Jebus for those who dared to abandon their caves, those who risked their lives to cross the oceans and those who dared to look up.

Almost makes me cry tears of joy when I see things like this. We can accomplish so much when we work together.

We are truly living in the future. That's what I think, at least. Every time I see a video like this. Or SpaceX boosters landing after returning from space.
