Men don't cry (or can't in public), so they suffer more?

This was I thinking.Actually I lost my uncle (who was like my dad) last week and while my mom, sister and aunt cried a lot they seem to be getting over this quite quickly. While me and my cousin (my uncle's son) though were apparently "stable" during the last rittes ,we can't even barely feel anything nice about watching "Brave" last day or say, a game of Wii tennis.

After a certain age, a man crying is an embarrasing sight to behold. But crying really helps to vents out the pathos and (scientific experiments do prove ) that has a calming effect really. So do men actually suffer more even if they don't (or kinda not allowed to) cry?

@Kevlar101 and almsdeathchild-Yeah, that applies.

but more than anything, for guys it is inappropriate in his own view if someone see him sobbing . Hence why guys rush to nearest restrooms and leave the tap open and stuff.

I've had a few emotional breakdowns in my lifetime. Also some movies and shows can make me shed tears. Cried in public? Only during some screenings in a dark theatre.

i don't think it's inappropriate for males to cry infront of people. it's not a sign of weakness unless you have a big ego. most people(including myself) hold back cause we don't like crying infront of others

planbfreak4eva

I think it depends on what your relationship was with that person and the manner in how they died.
Also depends on what type of injury or pain you're enduring and how long it's been ailing you.

eh if we speak depends on this depends on that then will never get an answer...am speaking of serious injuries like broken arm, 2 bones, 4 hours later surgery. 2 metal plates, screws, stitches. that sort of injuries. sort of same story on other hand. pinky clipped something sharp in a river and was hanging and about to drop. relative cancer, death... i think you get the drift here

On a sidenote, I find it extremely difficult to know what to say or what to do when somebody is mourning. For instance, say someone has just experienced a nasty divorce with 'the one'. I sometimes feel as if there is nothing I can do or say to alleviate that person's sorrow.

I haven't experienced that injury but some injuries will put you in a state of shock where you don't realize how bad the pain is and by the time you do, hopefully you're in a hospital on painkillers. I don't think it's mandatory that you cry if a relative dies unless you were truly close to them, or felt you should've and wanted to spend more time together.

I think there are shallow people who make big displays of emotion and are fine afterwards, probably because they didn't care all that much in the first place. And then there are deeper people who don't make a big display, but events have effected them deeply and it will take some time for them to get over it.

That's group think. If you feel something, let it out. No one will think lesser of you. Just don't cry everytime you see a dead squirrel in the road.

Man or woman, you need to let it all out sometimes. Nobody says you need to bust out in tears in public, screaming, wheezing, and beating your chest. You can go in the bathroom at home and just cry a little. It helps. Men shouldn't feel like they aren't allowed to cry. Just do it at an appropriate time.

Only one time I have cried in public and that was getting off the plane in Lima, Peru to do some medical work/research with the people there. I also cried walking through the streets there because I felt so alone and far from home (I went by myself) and realized how much Westerners have actually affected the people there...

That was the only time worthy of my tears and I felt I had to let everyone know how sad I was (I was a bit of a primadonna back then, a year ago).

Saying crying is a sign of weakness is bizzare. Being "weak" has nothing to do with feeling a particular emotion. If a man never experiences sadness then he isn't "strong' he's dissociated from his emotions. Kind of the opposite really.

TC, there are only a few instances where it's not weird for a man to cry. I think it's more than acceptable to cry after someone dies.

I am the exception to the rule. I'm not afraid to cry :D My bird (Yes my bird) died 2010 and I was depressed for like a week. I don't think I'd be able to handle myself if I hadn't allowed myself to cry. Its our body's way of handling things. In all seriousness, this is an old rule that is rapidly dying- (though it is still highly evident in high school, but you know what kids are like >.>) But uh, in public? I don't think anyone wants to be seen crying in public. Heck my mother was crying and she wore sunglasses (to hide the tears) in the shopping cent re trying to get out of there before she starting balling.

There's nothing wrong with a man crying if the situation calls for it. Everyone has emotions. It's how you deal with them that matters, like all things.
