I heard about this earlier today. Like everyone else has said, they should have just left him in prison to die.

Yea he should be in jail with that man who shot down Iran Air Flight 655 - oh wait...

I think its nice to see a country doing something moral in the face of objections from the US; compassion for this man is what seperates us in the civilised world from those who would attempt to destroy it.

Good on you Scotland.

Thats BS, whats the BS about "answering to a higher power?" You know what people should pay for their crimes HERE on this EARTH not in the "afterlife" and whatever that has in store.

I'd personally would punch both the prisoner and the guy who released him in the balls so hard they'd fall off. Just disgusting.

There were 35 students from my school on that flight.... he should have been let out... but only so the guards could smash his face into a storm drain and crush his skull...

In this case yes, as far as I can make out - the Libya has officially admitted responsibility for this attack, so this man was was a government agent (not hard to work out in either case because of his background) - which puts it on par with (amongst others) the Iran Air Flight 655 which happened shortly prior to the Lockerbie disaster. Now I'll tell you what, you go find Captain Rogers - Captain of the US ship that shot down that flight - and demand that he be put in jail.

As a final note, I'm not condoning the actions of either man Lockerbie was an awful event as are any losses of human life.

The downed Iranian plane was also a terrible occurence, but it was an accident...a case of mistaken identity as tragic as it was...Lockerbie was the intentional murder of innocent ppl...ill end by saying...he just should have been left in jail to rot

Agreed. At times US system is wonky harsh doing little more than costing lots of money. At the same time blowing up a plane like that if anything probably should qualify you for being in jail for the rest of your life.

Or a cold/sinus infection. Also, you have to kill at least 200 people to qualify for the bonus release program.

Makes you wonder how long Josef Fritzl will stay behind bars -- he is eligible for parole in 15 years. Of course, he may die of old age before then.

I think if it is proven that you mass killed people that you should plain and simply die. That way there would be less cost and more room in the prisons. Letting a man like this out even if he has cancer is still wrong he might decide to go out with a bang.

My mom had a good friend who died in that accident. I asked what she thought about this and she said that even though how horrendous it is and such, it's too little of a problem to hold a grudge against the commiter. Personally I think this man is abviously not socially right and should be kept from civilization before he commits any other atrocities.

Yes, I'm sure this guy was totally being oppressed by 270 people he never met from 21 different countries, and I'm also sure he totally had no other means to voice his opinion other than putting a bomb on a plane. Totally.

You know the man is a monster and he is getting a heroes welcome in his home country right now but I feel that this was the right thing to do. Compassion over revenge any day.

Keep in mind he has a family that would like to see him before he dies. Thats the whole reason he was released apparently. Some think it was because of a political reason involving Scotland and their desire to get oil from the country he is from.

He is going to die in at most a few months anyway. Ronnie Biggs was released for the same reason a week or two ago. This is no different.

Although I do think this was partly politically motived, to improve UK - Libya relations.

"Objectives

To protect the public and provide what commissioners want to purchase by:

  • Holding prisoners securely
  • Reducing the risk of prisoners re-offending
  • Providingsafe and well-ordered establishments in which we treat prisoners humanely, decently and lawfully."

http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/abouttheservice/statementofpurpose/

He is not exactly capable of re-offending, whilst dying of cancer. The most humane thing to do is release him to die.

The most humane thing to do was to not blow up 270 people in the air.
