Desktop for gaming. Laptop for coding (hate coding at home). Both for whatever the hell I'm doing on the computer.

topsemag55
Have you ever had the occasion to program in Assembly? I figure the Windows Core being in Assembly must be for speed.

I've programmed in x86 and MIPS, but was for school. It sucks a lot, but I'm under the strong belief that every programmer should have to do that for a few months. It made me better realize what goes on in the background, and overall made me better at it.

I have a laptop because I'm military and am subject to moving around more often then others, so it helps when my computer is portable.

I used to be a desktop fanboy, but laptops do it just as well. I bought a desktop replacement laptop and I have no complaints. By the time I need to upgrade it, I'll just go ahead and buy a new one like I do with my desktop. Like it will last me long enough that by the time one part needs upgrading, the whole thing will. As for cooling...it's not as terrible as people make it out to be. When the GPU and CPU each get their own fan and heat sink, temps stay pretty reasonable.

I prefer laptop, as it's alot more portable. To me, there's really no reason to have a desktop. I don't do any PC gaming, either.

It's similar to having a cell phone. Once you have a cell phone, there's really no compelling reason to have a landline home phone.

True, it's similar, but only similar. Desktops are considerably more powerful for less money than laptops so despite lacking portability, they offer great power and size in return.

For me it's desktop all the way. I have a MacBook and a Dell netbook and as much as I love them, after having them on for a while I hate having to deal with the heat they produce. Plus, I can never really get comfy with a laptop.

Desktops are great if you don't plan on going anyway but when I cant work in my bedroom then taking my laptop out and working in the library or to another quite place is far more valuable than playing games at high graphics

I like Laptop better, its what I am on right now, you can take it anywhere, its less of a hassle and depending on where you go its free internet. Sure desktops are powerful but I will trade that off in a heart beat for mobility.

Desktop, cheaper and better in every way.

Obviously laptops are often more portable, but these days many are heavy and have bad batteries anyway.

My first laptop was a 486 33 Mhz with 8MB of RAM. I've been on laptops ever since. I like being able to sit in bed while I play Team Fortress, post on forums, watch porn, or whatever.

Desktops have always been faster because of the simple fact that there is more room for components and heat management. When laptops get faster, so do desktops. How is something small going to outperform something large?

There is always ways of making things smaller and faster. The only reason I say it will advance this way is that in GENERAL laptops will be better, of course there will be desktops, but I imagine by then they'll be huge and there won't be any need for a smaller desktop like the ones people use now. Since laptops will be as good as desktops nowadays the portability should be useful allowing the person to carry computer anywhere. Right now I would say desktops technology wise are better and more people use them, but that will soon change because portability will be an important factor with selling comps. EDIT: Sorry for not adding enough details but thats my thought on the subject.

I'm not sure how any of that translates to how desktops will be somehow slower than laptops. If you can fit more transistors, more memory, more discreet components such as video cards, and more heat management in a larger form factor, then how can something small and portable be faster than something where you have virtually unlimited space?

Laptop if I can because then I'm not constrained to sitting at my desk to use it. I can relax on the couch or in bed with a laptop. Plus I can easily bring it to a friend's house and LAN.

Power basically comes down to transisters. Desktops will always have more because there's more room.

What about upgrading components in laptops? It will never be near a desktop because desktops will always do more. Ever heard of cpu, gpu and fan cooling? My PC is cooler than just about all laptops and helps with overclocking components, I would like to see a laptop having OC'd components without too much heat and exploding.XD Having more slots for peripherals? Using 2, 3 and 4 video cards for SLI/Crossfire will be near impossible unless you make the laptop bigger. Resolution is also a limiting factor, will any laptop get near 2560x1600 for that matter? And you still need to worry about heat, power consumption and battery life. And all while being cheaper than a good laptop...

lolwut? My CPU uses less than 10 watts while browsing, and the input voltage for the GPU is pulling just 0.88 volts. Compare that to 46 watts CPU usage for gaming.

My desktop has 550watts power supply. my laptop has Im not sure the power supply is but it's very small.

550 watts means how much load it can handle - it isn't pulling that much out of the wall, especially if you're just surfing the net.
