Before anyone even posts. I own many guns, I love to shoot for recreation and keep them in my home for protection. We have a history of hone invasions in my area (one ending in the murder of the homeowner just last year), don't try and turn this thread into another gun debate. There is absolutely nothing that you can post that would make me change my feelings on gun laws. The founders of this country felt the need to ensure citizens had that right, I choose to exercise that right.

That being said, are there are any other .357 magnum owners out there. I was floored by the power of this gun, It was 10X worse than I was expecting (Probably in part because it is a compact), but the .357 magnums were uncomfortable to shoot, I was only able to shoot 10 rounds before I needed to switch back to .38 specials. Those 10 rounds actually bruised up one of my fingers pretty good. Do you get used to this recoil, or should I just stick to .38 specials? I have a little regret at buying something this small in so powerful a caliber, but it's too late now, guns are final sale only and I'm not losing $250 on selling it back at this point.

You should get a scope for it in order to make it look 75% more awesome (and accurate).

Also if it's bruising your hand, you likely aren't holding it tight enough.

Why would you get a gun that powerful if the possible home invaders are not likely going to wear body armour? I'm sure you can get specs on what it takes to kill a human from x distance.

I didn't buy it to kill anyone... I have a smalled .32 I keep in the nightstand, something that I can control and not have to worry about over-penetration. The .357 was mainly for recreation, I just wanted to get something really powerful to try out and have a little fun with, but I quickly found out that shooting a .357 mag isn't a whole lot of fun.

I was holding onto it as tight as I could, my hands were turning white because I was clenching so hard to keep it in my hand after the round was fired. My middle finger was resting on the bottom of the trigger guard (which is where I'm bruised).

That's a pretty short barrel for a .357. If you think that much gunpowder hurts, try a short barrel .44 Magnum. The one I shoot is a bit longer than that, though.

I'd rather not have a gunsmith drill into the gun to fit a scope, the gun was relatively cheap (about $500), and putting that kind of money into it to fit a scope seems a little silly. Plus I'm not all that concerned about looks, LOL... I have a scoped pistol already, so I don't really feel the need for another.

yeah, it's a 3" barrel, I should have bought the 6" but I wanted something small (all my other pistols are huge monsters). I thought that my next gun would be a .44 mag until I shot this one. If this one isn't pleasant to shoot I can only imagine what a .44 would be like.

I've shot a Taurus .357 Gaucho before (basically a South American clone of the Colt SAA) with a 7.5in barrel, so the while there's more kick than my Glock 22 (.40S&W), it doesn't feel like I'm gonna lose control of it. I'd stick with .38 Special for your gun if you don't want to go back and get something with a longer barrel.

I own a Ruger GP 100 6in

Love the gun. The only thing I hate is I never got around to adjusting the sites, so it shoots up and to the right.

I actually love the recoil, though have learned to wear both ear plugs and ear covers (at the same time) to prevent ear ringing.

To bad ammo is now around 30$ for 50.:(

I personally dont own any gun but I know how to shoot, and personally i think u need to hold the gun tighter.. I dont own a gun cause I know I woudnt have the guts to shoot someone, so taking it out on self defense would most likely end with my death lol I shoot at shooting ranges/hunting every now and then (more then than now lol)

Why are you arguing such an arbitrary point? If he's going to get a gun for protection, why try and calculate the smallest caliber round neccessary to kill someone... instead of just buying something powerful that he feels comfortable with?

Yep. That is mainly a self defense/carry gun. It's not not to be comfortable for prolonged shooting.

My dad has 2 .357 magnums. I remember shooting a few .357 round, then going back to .38 specials. It kicks a lot, but it never hurt my hand. :? The only gun that ever hurt my hand was a tiny 9 MM pistol. The handle sucks. :x

Do people who buy guns ever contemplate killing themselves and what that would be like? Is that why people buy guns in addition to making them feel tough and that if someone bad mouthed them they could imagine themselves blowing that persons head off? Is it to make up for their physical and emotional weakness? l0ve

Wth are you talking about? Guns are bought primarily for protection/sport and it just so happens that they look awesome.

Do people who buy guns ever contemplate killing themselves and what that would be like?l0ve

Not me, but maybe some owners do, I couldn't comment on that.

Is that why people buy guns in addition to making them feel tough and that if someone bad mouthed them they could imagine themselves blowing that persons head off?l0ve

For me it's recreation and peace of mind knowing that I can protect my home and my wife in the rare event of a home invader (as I said a homeowner was murdered during such last year literally 5 minutes from the home where myself and wife sleep every night. As far as feeling tough, not really, considering I'm not flashing it around and puffing up my chest. For a gun that will probably spend it's entire life inside of an un-opened nightstand drawer (since as I found out it's a terrible recreational shooter) it will probably not do too much for my ego.

Is it to make up for their physical and emotional weakness? l0ve

For me? Neither, I have no more "emotional weakness" than the next man but I guess we all do to some degree (yourself included). As far as physical weakness goes probably the average American adult male, a little overweight and a little out of shape, but nothing (hopefully) damaging my physical health.

...oh wait... was that supposed to be a rhetorical jab at me as a human being for having the audacity to legally own a firearm? If so, never mind, ignore my responses.
