Great movie, but I disagree with it being better than Godfather 1 and 2. Dances with Wolves beat it for movie of the year which is criminal in my eyes because it is amongst the greatest mobster movies ever made and one of the best films of all time imo, I just can't put it above the first 2 Godfather movies.
@sammyjenkis898:
No way in hell was it anywhere close to being as good as the first 2 Godfather movies and their associated Oscars. Not even close.
lol
It's better. Godfather films aren't even Coppola's best.

Godfather 2 alone is better than Goodfellas.

Nah, not even close. I'd rank Godfather Pt. II at the bottom of Coppola's big four, though.
So whatever.
Yes, absolutely.
yes, better than any of the godfather movies
Not really. Better than Part III, for sure. But it's neck and neck at the least with parts I and II.

Well of course, that honour goes to Jack. Good ol' Jack.

never saw part 3, but certainly beats 1 or 2 in my opinion.
It can get a little boring. It's a good movie with some GREAT scenes.
Lets face it, the "Funny how?" scene is one of the most iconic gangsta movie scenes of all time. They should have just dropped the mic and ended the film on that scene.
Ugh. Joe Pesci is exactly the reason I don't like the movie much.
Pesci represents everything the film does right, and how it essentially redefined the genre.
And if we're actually talking about "best gangster movie ever," Once Upon a Time in America comes out on top.
You're goddamned right it's a good movie. Anyone saying otherwise should be prohibited from sexual reproduction.

I could never get into the Godfather movies. They were so slow that I didn't have the patience. I'll have to give them another chance...except for #3.
@sammyjenkis898:
wow, you are quite misguided.
The first 2 Godfather movies each are clearly better than this movie, isn't even close. Again, it's a good movie, but definitely overrated. Are you guys still teens?
Gee, I'm convinced. No, I'd take Scorsese's energized filmmaking and perfect soundtrack over The Godfather. Also, this isn't a case where I'm going to accentuate the faults of the other film because there's no need. Simply prefer Scorsese's sensibilities here.
@sammyjenkis898:
The first 2 Godfather movies were Coppallos best.....period. And yes, better than Apocalypse Now.
They are considered among the greatest movies of all time.......unarguably. Anything said to the contrary is laughably absurd.
If you're going to foolishly bring up how renowned the films are, the same can be said for Apocalypse Now.
The Conversation is my favorite Coppola, though. So this conversation isn't going anywhere.

Prefer the Godfather as well (2 that is), but your argument here basically amounts to trying to belittle people for having a different opinion, that in itself is juvenile.

Like him or not, it's the iconic scene that essentially created the opening for The Sopranos and post modern gangsta fiction.

Google greatest movies of all-time if you will, and see where The Godfather (first 2) fits in. Then do the same with Goodfellas. Case closed with that. Taxi Driver is better Scorsese than Goodfellas.
Goodfellas is a good movie, but not a great one (so I'd say the answer is yes). The first 2 Godfather movies are great, nearly every scene is a classic, and I liked Godfather 2 De Niro better than Goodfellas De Niro.
Ultimately, The Godfather movies should never have been brought up, Goodfellas isn't nearly that caliber.

Now you're listing other peoples opinions, while disregarding everyone else's.
It is alright. Personally, I feel like every one of the big gangster movies is overrated though. Tis a much better movie than say, Scarface....

I prefer the Godfather films, but I can easily see why one would prefer Goodfellas over them. There's so much energy and exubrance put into the film that it's hard to not be completely sucked into the world around it. Both films are excellent for very different reasons.
Yet here you are just alluding to what the general opinion is instead of reinforcing your own. It's a rather petty case you're trying to make here.
