Note that when I say "bad memories", I'm referring to memories that are unpleasant to remember.
Sometimes I wish I could get rid of memories like these.

On the other hand, some bad memories are important because they provide a premises as to what processes should not be repeated.

No. Bad memories teach you important lessons, they warn you against making the same mistake again.

When your brain keeps something around you want to get rid of, its because you need it there.

Now, if I had been like raped or something, that might be a different story. Although I imagine the people around me would find the change in person rather jarring if something that had changed my life significantly was suddenly just gone, so even then, I don't know.

What about memories that were placed into your mind from something involuntary?

Example: A four year old child being abused by their parents. What lesson is to be learned from that?

most people are working hard at erasing bad memories as we speak. drinking, smoking, drugs, numerous other activities--all designed to lose yourself, and forget.

Most drugs don't serve in erasing bad memories. I suppose depressants and intoxicants can assist in "numbing" these thoughts, but at the same rate they can intensify emotions resulting from past experiences.

No. I'm not going to get all cliche and say that they've made me "stronger" or anything, but I think that purposely erasing traces of my past would be a little weird. I am who I am.

You learn from bad experiences, and they only make you stronger. Life is the way it is, even if t3hrubikscube would wish it otherwise.

If you are one who is predisposed to wronging others, then wouldn't having guilty memories of previous events make you less likely to wrong people in the future?

That is to say that you have a memory of wronging people, and that makes you feel BAD. Isn't that an incentive to not do wrong to other people? If you DIDN'T feel bad about your memories of those events, then wouldn't you be more likely to repeat those events?

No. Memories are not what you are, they are only your recollection of past events. I would erase what I did in the past, thus changing the person I am today, but I would not erase the memories as that only erases what is in my mind and not what actually happened
