Having a cold isnt just one virus, theres thousands of them. Yes they could cure that one cold, but it would take a long time to find out that one cold, not to mention the chance of getting that one cold virus again is just way to small to do something about it. Since theres thousands of them, your most likely to get another one of them next time, and because a cold isnt really that life-threatning its better to just have it a few days to a week.

I believe that they could come up with a cure for cancer. All of this money put towards it, there's no doubt in my mind that they could. But if they cured it, they could cure everyone, and then how would they be paid?

Colds are viruses that mutate all the time.

Cancers are created withing the body unless induced by a carcinogen. A cancer is caused when the cell's replication system goes out of control, causing a tumor. Chemotherapy and medications are needed. Tumors may need to be surgically removed.

Viruses are much harder to keep track of than cancers. Some viruses are deadly, others are just inconvenient. Colds are just inconvenient and are treatable with medication to keep symptoms down. Influenza can be deadly and it mutates all the time, so that's why new vaccines need to be developed when a new strain is found.

Cancers can be curable through treatment, not by any miracle drug or anything.

Colds can be fought, but you can't get rid of it entirely.

There are several cures for some cancers, that's why they are able to treat it. Also, a cold and cancer are two totally different things, jut because they can't cure one doesn't mean you can't cure the other.s

Curing the cold is about destroying the cause of it: which there are thousands (maybe millions) strains of it and more everyday. Curing cancer is more about destroying the effects(the tumor). It would hopefully take only one cure to be able to target any cancerous tumor cells and eliminate them without destroying good tissue. This is what makes sense to me anyway.

We can cure colds? There are thousands of different types of cold though. Once you have had a cold you then become immune to that type, its not the same cold each time you get one LOL. So this thread in innacurate and once again proves how ill educated some people are.

There never will be a cure for cancer (atleast not an available one) because theres no profit in a cure. They may release different medications that will ensure u dont suffer but u will still die from it.

If a cure was to be released and all of the millions of people the world over stopped dying then all of the mega corporations that make these medicines would be out of business overnight and we all know that will NEVER be allowed to happen, the powers that be would rather us contuinue to die so they can eap massive profits from us to continue filling their own pockets.

Yes, of course! All the world's medical researchers, both in the private and public sectors, are being manipulated behind the scenes by a secret global organization. Sure, a scientist might be tempted by promises of Nobel Prizes, name in the history books, etc., but THEY will never allow it to happen. Why? Because of money; that's why!

You cannot cure a virus, only the symptoms (one of which is loss of taste, and that is my most hated one). It could be immunised but that would be impractical and expensive for the government. Cancer is simply the uncontrollable mutation of cells. All they have to do is find a common weakness in cancer cells and exploit it. A cold has millions of different variations, most of which change after a while so that they appear new.

The cold will stop existing when nobody/nothing catches one for a year or so.

Cure is post-infection. Prevent is pre-. In the incredibly unlikely case of one of us catching small pox, our chances of survival are about the same as what they would've been back in the 19th Century.

There will never be a cure for cancer because of the incredibly different varied types of cancer and the difficulty in creating a cure that destroys only the specific tumor cells without severely harming the person.

Besides, people would continue to develop cancer even if they had been cured before. In fact, a cure would probably be more lucrative than the current treatments now, because patients would have to continue to treat the cancer for the rest of their elongated lives.

The three million posters ahead of me have already said this but: The common cold is constantly changing, it is very rare that you would get sick with the same strand twice. Not that you know which strand it is of course.

Well, there are many various types of colds, which are viruses. They mutate constantly making it hard to pin down a weakness.

Cancer isn't a virus. It's when a cell in your body that mutates and fails to carry out apoptosis (cell suicide). It then begins to duplicate itself and latch onto a specific part of your body. In most (if not all cases) it is the p53 gene failing. The cells can also spread around your body, also called metastasize.

My cousin just died of cancer. Was in her liver and lungs. Meaning it metastasized from one spot into another (actually was in 2 spots on the liver). Caused by smoking.

Cancer can change just as much, if not more than a virus. We may be able to stop certain types of cancer, or reduce the risk of it, but we will forever be locked in a struggle against cancer, ensuring that the medical industry will always have a source of income.

There is no panacea for all of life's ills. The medical industry will never go out of business.

I think applying nanotechnology towards medicine will yield a cure for cancer.

Think about it, just program mini robots (powered by your blood, perhaps) to search out and destroy cells that have cancerous DNA/RNA, that destroy themselves automatically after all the cancer has been eliminated.

Cancer would be considered no more of a threat than the flu.

It might also work for colds, since nanobots would basically be antibodies on steroids.

Of course, nanotechnology is still primitive, so it will probably be a while before anything like this actually shows up. But I really think nanomedical research would yield some amazing breakthroughs.

EDIT: Hmm.. maybe it wouldn't be successful against colds.

Perhaps... when you get a cold, you go in to your pharmacist, have them test some blood to ID the strain, then they program some 'bots to target that cells carrying that strain, and inject them into your arm and the cold disappears within 24 hours.

And imagine, the things could clean out your arteries! You would never need to worry about getting killed by a big Mac ever again!

Of course, in order for this to work, the entire human genome would need to be mapped. But it would be revolutionary.

Yesterday I said the exact same thing as the TC said in the title of this topic. That is amazing. And I agree completely. If they can't cure a simple sickness, they will NEVER cure cancer.
