Why must the existence of humans be the "perfect balance"? Aren't you ascribing a value to the world, a world which may very well be nothing more than neutral? Perhaps the current state is evil.

You don't choose to believe in something or not. You just do or don't, you can't suddenly say I'm going to believe in God today because that isn't faith.

Well you could believe in him... Or you could not believe in him. Sort of how beliefs work, their fairly double sided.

Words like "can't" should never be used to present a valid argument unless you have proof that your "can't" statement is 100% valid. In this instance, you don't. The idea that God created heaven and Earth is one possibility; I've seen no evidence to suggest that it "couldn't" have happened by chance.

I contend that we are all atheists of the vast majority of all the gods that society has ever worshiped, if you understand why you reject all those, you will understand why I reject yours. -Paraphrasing from some guy who's name I can't remember.

I've never seen a reason to say he exists.

Looking at the world and thinking it's beautiful isn't evidence of anything.

And things being in ballance isn't evidence either. Life evolved to fit the environment, and not the other way around. If the ballance had been different, we either would have evolved into different creatures or not be here at all.

If the existence of a God doesn't infringe on my ability to live as I choose, let there be God. I couldn't care less if there is or isn't a God (I'm not even sure what the word is supposed to mean,) I frankly have more important and interesting things to think about... Like what's for dinner tonight.

I have to be honest: this question is utterly pointless, because rather or not you like it, you already know what his answer is going to be. You know he's going to say it's in the Bible, so why bother asking?

I wouldn't say anything is in perfect balance. If that's true then why are 99.99% of the species that ever graced the earth now extinct? Why are there natural disasters, why is there disease, why is there so much apparent waste in the universe - so much emptiness, ect. The list goes on and on.

To be fair, your assertion requires that either evolution happened or creationism happened. An admittedly small minority - myself included- doesn't believe that either one is a definitive conclusion.

No, because for someting to be an accident, there has to have been some sor of intention that was never fulfilled.

There is no intention behind hte universe, and so it isn't an accident.

Since TC is a Christian seeing the world as a work of God comes natural, it's easy to see Him in trees, birds, the wind - everything. So from his pov it is understandable that he would ask such a question. But atheists and agnostics - I'm curious how many people who don't believe in God feel like they "chose" not to believe? I'm pretty sure most atheists and agnostics couldn't believe if they wanted to unless they were presented with a good reason, for TC nature is reason enough but this doesn't work many of us.

A random gamma ray burst or stray comet could wipe us out pretty quickly. Mass extinctions do happen, and it just goes to show that whatever fine balance people can see in the world, it's all ultimately at the mercy of unpredictable natural events like this. We are but a grain of sand on a never ending beach. Basically my point is that the world around me doesn't tell me whether there is a God or not.

Wasn't Mother Theresa bat **** crazy and irreconcilably unhappy with her religious beliefs. I may be wrong, but she did say: ""Lord, my God, who am I that You should forsake me? The child of your love -- and now become as the most hated one -- the one You have thrown away as unwanted, unloved. I call, I cling, I want. And there is no one to answer -- no one on whom I can cling. No, no One. Alone . . . I am told God loves me and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul."" While Osama is probably watching porn on an HDTV while eating Doritos. This world is so backwards. TC, believing in God is an insanely personal leap of faith. People who believe in some supernatural being are doing so without an tangible/corporeal evidence. If you think about it, it is kind of nutty to believe such considering how much we don't know and can not verify about God; however, a religion defines him/her/it.

It seems difficult for you to get it because you're manipulating what an atheist believes. You used the common straw man; that if God didn't create it, it must have happened by random luck. No atheist I've ever seen believes that it's just a cosmic lottery that we won. There's no denying that nature is beautiful, but I'm not satisfied with the classic cop out of "gawd did it". If all we did was cop out like that, we would never get anywhere.

You're equivocating lack of God with the necessary existence of chance. That, however, does not necessarily have to be. There could be already preordained ways of operation ingrained in the natural world as illustrated by Game Theory. Things react in certain ways and may necessitate certain outcomes. None of this requires God.

I can see what you're saying. I used to be Agnostic and have been given many reasons to believe since then. I have been a Christian now for 20 years. I chose to believe in God due to the many different experiences I have had in my life, which for me, is proof that God exists. However, this isn't something I can pull out of my back pocket and prove to anyone else.

I know what you mean. I don't claim to know better than Athiests or agnostics, but I do not understand how one could think everything that occurs in our world to be merely chance. Love, at least for me, validates the existence of a god in my mind.

Do you ever stop to ponder why God would allow us to destroy his perfectly created world? Or why an all-knowing God would instruct Adam to not eat from the Tree of Wisdom, already knowing that he would eat from it? Well, I wasn't exactly contrasting the two in terms of religious views but rather how the world perceives one to be the ultimate example of good and the other one of evil.

Some of the people above have a point. We are merely looking the universe through goggles; what makes sense for some doesn't make sense for others.
