I see this a lot. People refer to other people with the bodies of one gender, as the other, based only on what that person identifies as. That's what these communities instruct people to do.

What is your opinion on this?

Do you think we should call a female brain in the body of a man, a she?

Does that person first have to modify their appearance and behavior?

Will you ever refer to them as she, given they were born in the body of a man?

vice versa for women.

Personally, I have a hard time letting go of the fact that chromosomes are still chromosomes. To me, gender is anatomical first, psychological second. I would still do it if it made the person feel comfortable.

For me, gender is purely a societal construct brainwashed into us at an early age.

The sign of true enlightenment is the ability to deprogram yourself and transcend gender, and act not in accordance with social norms and traditions, but how you want to.

This. Ask what gender someone identifies themselves with, and that's all you need.

People who have a Y chromosome are men, those without them are women. At a more face value, its people with penises are men, those with vaginas are women.

Not a hard concept.

I have milk glands and ovaries, I'm a female as far as I know. There are some unfortunate individuals who were born into a male body, with a female mindset, and I will bet that most of them, if not all of them, feel as if they lack something that make them 'true' women - the genitals and glands that allow the miracle of birth to happen. It's sadly one of those things we cannot, yet?, create. I am not saying these people will never be women in my own eyes, however. Depending on how any given person identifies, I'd call them him/her accordingly. For example, we have a couple of MTF transgender members on GS; they identify as being female, and I treat them as my fellow women.

Sex is biological. Gender is part of one's identity, as it is largely (though arguably not entirely) a social construct.

No. Some people are born into the 'wrong' body. They can often identify themselves as the opposite gender from an early age, stating that something is not right about them or that they don't understand why they were given the wrong body.

I truely believe that there are people that could benefit from sex reassignment surgery, but I really can't relate nor can I understand the mind of a woman so as far as I can tell men have a penis and women have a vagina.

The people who say "gender equals body parts," are too brainwashed in their own gender to think about separating the two from one another.

I'll say it again: gender is identity-based, and has both a sociocultural and, arguably, a biological basis. Sex is a biological trait.

I'm not really sure. Gender can not only be different than sex, but it can be fluid. I identify as male, am a male physically... but I do not fulfill the majority of gender stereotypes associated with the male gender. I express my feelings, I don't act macho for the sake of it, and I don't necessarily participate in activities that men are "supposed" to like (i.e. sports).

The hottest trap in the world is still a dude and the most masculine chick in the world is still a woman, after sex reassignment surgery it can change. I don't have the time to do a blood test to check hormonal levels or a psych evaluation to determine the true gender of every chick I meet. I totally respect transgenders and believe there are women trapped in men's bodies and visa versa but I don't have the expertise to determine that so I stick to the most defining physical characteristic of a gender.

No. That is marginalizing to millions of people across the globe. If you cannot accept the identification that makes someone feel happy and complete, then you are a bigot.

Some people are cisgendered. Some are transgendered, others consider themselves to be genderfluid. There are people who are agendered, and people who have multiple genders. And then there are those who do not fit any of these categories, who fall under the catch-all non-binary term genderqueer. If you cannot accept these people for who they are, then George Takei has some words for you.

You can consider any number of charateristics an indication of gender but sexual organs are the chief identifier. All your feelings and sexual orientation are great, whatever. Gender is defined as a man or woman. That's how it is.

The social construct that defines which sex people are identified with. As it stands, due to cultural norms -- which is the prevalent force behind social constructs, it is essentially synonymous with sex irrespective of the thoughts of the subjects, to all practical intents. This may change with time.

If you consider yourself female, then you are female. Neither your chromosomes nor your sexual organs define your gender. And in the grand scheme of things, using public restrooms should be a complete non-issue. I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at, other than that you have an immature and petty standpoint on this subject. :|

If gender is a choice, but referred to in terms of he and she, then why do we still call animals he or she based purely on their anatomy?

ITT:

  • Confusion of sex vs. gender
  • Failing to grasp that society at large often delegates people into different genders than certain persons identify as
  • Fustercluckish, incoherent debate
