I'm volunteering at a library because apparently it will help me get into a good college.

In high school, I was an active member of Key Club (a national club focused on volunteer projects). I don't do volunteer work right now, but I'd like to do it again in the near future.

I used to all the time in various places for various things. Last thing I volunteered at was a fund raiser for my mom cause of her cancer.. some may say it was more of an obligation.. but its still volunteer work. *Shrugs* But yea, ive done all sorts of things in the past. Currently cant really afford to give up any of my time though cause I have my kids and full time mommy work is tough business. When they are old enough to go to school tho... Ill most likely start again. So I chose Other cause i haev in the past, I would if i had more time, and i plan on it in the future.

I did around 180 hours throughout high school with my JROTC unit, and I was the founder/president of Key Club at my school. Yes, it got me into my first choice college

Oh yeah, it sucks because nowadays you pretty much need hours to get into college. That's really the only reason why I started doing service in the first place and why I started up the club, but in the end, I found that it turned out to be lots of fun and rewarding.

How can you call it volunteer work if it's required? That's a problem I had with my Key Club this year. A lot of people would come for only one meeting so they could put on their resumes that they WERE in the club. A lot of people wanted to make it a rule that they had to do 10 hours of service each semester or so, but I didn't institute such a rule because it goes against the concept of service imo.

Yeah. It's required that Ontario HS students complete 40 hours to get their diploma.

During school we needed 40-some hours of community service for a certain class. So I worked at a food bank for those hours.

yes, i did. at the time, i was under the impression that it would have some great influence on the colleges that would accept me. i volunteered at a boys and girls club as a tutor.

i also did odd jobs like playing bingo at a retirement home. i almost look forward to the time when i can be entertained by little things over and over again. i would grab the bingo ball "B4" out of the roller and call it out for everybody. this would happen several times over the course of the afternoon. each time the same old guy would say "Before what?" and each time everybody would laugh like it was the first time they had ever heard it.

I've done a few things. Habitat for Humanity was the most enjoyable. I wish I had the time to do it more often but when I am not at school I am working and now during the summer I am just working. Volunteering is fun and all but I need money to pay for tuition.
