I've watched this movie like 5 times and I keep thinking that it's probably a masterpiece. The reason I say probably is because I still have no clue what the eff is going on. Thoughts?

It's pretty simple:
The time people or whatever made a mistake and need to use Donnie in order to fix it, which is why only he can see "Frank".
Yes, recently in fact. I really like it, especially the music that was selected. It fits the movie perfectly.

I thought it was average, kind of like Fight Club. Maybe slightly less than average having seen it a couple times.

Amazing movie. Definitely one of my favorites. The societal sattire is glorious, especially coming from someone who attended a private high school. ;)

Its a great movie and one that is very deep, it took me a many views to really understand what was going on and I'm sure I still don't really understand it all. The soundtrack is all sorts of awesome! I watched it a few months ago with my girlfriend and she even liked it I think.

Yeah, don't remind me... What a joke of an "independent film." I watch a lot of obscure "independent" films, and Donnie Darko was simply one of the worst. Far too overrated.

Basically he was supposed to die the entire time when the plane part crashed his room. When he wasn't in is room the first time around, it created a tangent timelime. Where he goes through all that **** and shoots Frank the Bunny (who also acts as a "time fixer") and where his mom, GF and sister die in the alt timeline. At the end he figures it out and travels back in time during that storm and stays in his room to fix the time stream - where Frank, his mom, GF and sister will all survive. Which is why he laughs at the end.

Meh, one of those movies that are "cool" to like but really aren't as good as people make them to be. Similar to Boondock Saints and American History X

Its a really good movie, the Director's Cut expands much more on the story and philosophy or time travel. Its hard to understand, but there is definitely a legitimate meaning and purpose to it all, and what makes it great for me is the feeling that you are just as confused and in the dark as Donnie is.

Yeah, I've seen it, and thought it was utter trash. The movie was filled with really bad acting, others did decent. The 3rd act is a joke, and acts as a cop-out, completely uneven and separating itself from entire first, and second act. On top of that, the movie felt pointless, and was boring in all-it's-glory. Besides that, the plot is decent, and the dark atmosphere, and direction, were pretty good.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by so many people not liking this movie. I won't call it a masterpiece, but given the time it was made, I thought it tolda very interesting story, had a wonderful script and some very solid actors in it. I also stumbled upon this movie, but it has become one I can only watch when I'm in a certain mood, it isa tad depressing.

What you should do is visit the official Donnie Darko website. It was made for the film and really cool.

The entire movie doesn't 'fit' into the movie, which many critics don't accept (and I don't blame them).

But I like that sort of stuff and its fun.

Try this site:

http://www.cesspit.net/drupal/node/1708

or this

http://www.themoviegoer.com/donnie_darko.htm

When you get bored, Google 'Donnie Darko explained' and stuff like that.

Yes, I agree with you (except the American History X part, I enjoyed that film), but I do agree with the whole cool to like thing but aren't really that good, such as Donnie and Boondock

I really enjoyed it. However, I don't think the director has any idea why the original movie worked, as evidenced by his awful director's cut and the commentary on the original. His explanations are garbage and ruin the entire movie. Also see his second movie, which is beyond terrible.

Do you mean Kelly's next movie after Darko, or the sequel to Darko? Because he had no part in S. Darko.

Southland Tales, I think. I know he wasn't involved in the second Darko movie (I never bothered to watch it).
