In my opinion, it is Johann Sebastian Bach. His pieces are rarely repitious. There is always a moment in his compositons that are truely outstanding, and he wrote all of this. Over 1000 suites/cantanas/etc. and that adds up to at least 3,000 pieces! 3,000

Of course we can't forget about: Brahms, Beethoven, Lizt, Chopin, Debussy, Paganini, Mozart, Barrios, Tarrega, Albeniz, amoung others...

Umm..... I don't know any classical music composers other than Mozart and Bach.....

For songwriters though, Stephen Malkmus is awesome. This proves it. I like Shane MacGowan's lyrics and music as well.

Edit: How could I forget Beethoven? :P

John Williams. Period. But if you are talking classical, then Camille Saint-Saens is one of my faves.

Beethoven, purely because I think his first movement in the moonlight sonata is the greatest piece ever written.

well, tons of classical composers were just incredible. But as far as modern music goes, I'd have to say Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth is a simply amazing songwriter. Jason Becker is awesome as well.

I'm not sure. But I think Jesse Lacey is one of the greatest. He writes almost all the music and lyrics for Brand New and is amazing at it. Trent Reznor is pretty amazing too.

Of older/classical music: Beethoven, but Bach is a close second. He has some really intricate stuff. Beethovens stuff seems to be more emotional than technical. I am a piano major :)

Current Generation: Bob Dylan probably..

very influential band... but in my opinion, pretty generic lyrics. Though they are better than 90% of the garbage out today.
