So, I am currently doing some stock selection at the library, buying new books for the teenage section. The age range this is aimed at is about 14 - 18. I have been able to find copious suggestions for good books for teenage girls (a set of Twilight books and I'm away :P) but I am finding it harder to choose some for the lads.

I have ordered Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road', of course, and William Sutcliffe's 'Bad Influence'. We have copies of these in the Adult Fiction section but I think they would be good additions to the Teenage as well.

But yeah, can any of you fine chaps recommend me some good reading that you have enjoyed, that I could suggest to the avid (!) young male readers please? They don't need to be specifically aimed at teenage readers, but obviously I could do without them being particularly offensive, or graphic sexually.

Thank you :)

Get "Maps in a Mirror" by Orson Scott Card. It's a collection of his short stories, and imo they're even better than his books.

They may not have much literary value but anything you find from the top shelf will have big pictures which will keep their attention longer than any novel will!

Horatio Hornblower?

Or is that too stuffy and old? :\

If you want newer things, there's also John Bellairs' horror novels. Not quite as 'mature' as Steven King, maybe, but a hell of a lot scarier.

Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingir by David Paoloni

The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathon Stroud

As every one else said, Lord of the Rings

The Redwall series pretty good, but appeals to a younger crowd imo (~12)

Some books I've read in school that I enjoyed were The Catcher in the Rye, The Lord of the Flies, and the Great Gatsby.

LOTR and The Hobbit are must haves but i expect you already have them.

The Warhammer books particularly the 40K ones are good and aimed straight at that audience, Robert Rankin books are great comedies. However you may get caught up by the offensive issue, warhammer 40k: is heavy on the violence (the ones i've read have included people being shredded, gutted, crushed, burnt ect), the only thing that i can think of that may catch the Rankin books is that ones of them featured a teddy bear detective that went to a brothel to collect information.

I always like the "We Were There" collection of stories when I was young. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Were_There I also liked "The Indian in the Cupboard" series. Maybe those are too young for the 18 year olds though.

TBH most teenaged boys wouldnt even understand those.. ive read all of those and a few (divine comedy) were pretty tough reads. You have to consult a lot of commentary to understand the divine comedy

Assuming they don't spend their time with their head in a soft porn magazine, then anything from the Black Library will probably be good for the lads.

Don't think you'd necessarily find them in the teenage section of a library though... Unless it's in a school. Do kids still read horror these days?

If you're gonna buy kids some books, at least get the good ones... 1984, Animal Farm, etc. Let them learn something and think

The Three Musqueteers

Notre-Dame of Paris

(sorry if those titles are a bit off, I read them in french)

Emile Zola's Germinal

EDIT:

Paulo Poelho's "Veronica Decides to Die" and "11 minutes", much better than The Alchemist

This is some great stuff guys thanks :D

LOTR, Percy Jackson, Redwall (though I LOVE that TFG posted in my thread! Heart! *pride* :P), Eragon etc. however have long been in stock. I need more of the obscure random suggestions if at all possible! But thank you it's still great.

Stephen King is already on my order list, I've gone for Carrie, Salem's Lot, Pet Sematary, It, Misery and The Shining. Any other suggestions there?

Terry Pratchett also already on my list: (Though I would like the whole set I doubt they would let me :P) I have gone for Mort, Guards Guards, Moving Pictures, Reaper Man, Soul Music and Night Watch.

And the Black Library is some awesome suggestion guys, Caiaphas Caine is totally going down. Ooh and Titanicus.

Please keep the suggestions coming though fellows, it's is a massive, massive help. I've got to burn through a grand somehow :P

Moving pictures is easily my favourite Discworld novel... and if you've not got it in the Sci-fi section, Going Postal might be an idea since Sky have adapted it (think it's on a Xmas) and you know what people are like for watching something they've seen on telly.
