The greatest movie of 2000 most definitely. All time, it goes against the likes of Dark Knight, and then falls flat.battlefront23
I agree with this guy.

Nope.
Gladiator is preetty good spectacle and has some great moments and is a personal favoritre of the decade but I dont think its as great compared to how much I enjoy it, there's alot better epics.
And the Dark Knight has been the most fun at theatres this year and is a pretty decent crime film but its not that great.
2001: A Space Odyssey is, however the greatest film ever :P

No you didn't! :x Blasphemer!
So it's better than both the LoTR trilogy and the Godfather trilogy? I think not.Vaasman
It's much better than the LoTR trilogy. I wouldn't say Gladiator is far from the best movie ever - but I wouldn't say it's close either. The Godfather on the other hand is close. Or could be.

Well its alot of fun and it is pretty awesome in theatres but this "greatest film ever stuff" needs to stop. Agh, im fighting a lossing battle ok TDK is the best film out there ;)

Gladiator is the best in its genre, easily surpassing Alexander, Troy, and all those wannabe historical epics. What's the best movie ever? Well, its probably whichever good movie you saw last ;)JedRecluseBen-Hur is better than any of those.

Yea, its not difficult for Gladiator to be considered great when up against those two, and Im a big fan of Gladiator.
Also Lawrence of Arabia is better than all of those, in fact its the best :P

Rottentomatoes also says Juno is a better film than The Assassination of Jesse James. But, yes, the Lord of the Rings is far, FAR superior to Gladiator.

Don't care about Rotten Tomatoes. The trilogy is largely overrated. Gladiator is also overrated, but I think it was extremely well-done. Maybe it was Russel Crowe. Who knows. Guess I'm a LOTR hater.
Rottentomatoes also says Juno is a better film than The Assassination of Jesse James.Yea they also have the 4th Indiana Jones at 78%. So critics aren't always reliable, but they're the best source of valid opinions we have. But, yes, the Lord of the Rings is far, FAR superior to Gladiator.

As a whole, but take any of the trilogy and pit it against Gladiator seperately. This entire argument is purely opinionated. I read an article today that stated the top ten films of all time, as voted by fans, movie makers and movie producers. The Godfather won. Behind that came Raiders Of The Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Shawshank Redemption, Jaws, Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Singin' In The Rain, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club.

I always stick to the more trustworthy guys, like J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum, but even they slip up for me.

There is no such thing as a valid opinion when it comes to film. For example, Terry Gilliams film Tideland got mostly terrible reviews saying it was too dark and twisted, but I loved Tideland. The 2 genres you should never rely on critics for ever are comedy and horror. Comedy because some people find something funny, while others dont, its a tough genre to critiszie. Horror because critics in general dont like horror films much these days. I never read reviews before I see a film, if the film I liked got bad reviews then woop de do, why should I care. Burn after reading didnt get the great reviews that fargo and other coen brothers films got, but I loved it just as much as most coen brothers films.
