You probably already heard about this... if not...

Fatal shot to abdomen

Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan, a Tennessee girl, aged 3, accidentally killed herself on Sunday night, according to local police in Wilson County. The incident allegedly occurred after she mistook a gun for a Wii controller.

Investigators claim that the girl's stepfather, Douglas Cronberger, had left a semi-automatic weapon on the living room table, and that the child had mistaken it for a Nintendo Wii controller. The child is then said to have fatally shot herself in the abdomen. She was rushed to hospital, but pronounced dead the same night.

Real gun on top, Wii contoller on bottom

Pictured: Genuine gun on top, compared to Wii peripheral on bottom (WSMV)

The stepfather claims he was asleep at the time of the incident, according to authorities. The stepfather also claims the child's mother, Tina AnnCronberger, was in the room with the child at the time of the incident.

The mother has told authorities the girl might have thought she was playing with a Nintendo Wii controller that resembled a gun. According to the stepfather, the gun was out because he had heard a prowler and gotten the gun out earlier that evening. He then left the gun on the table in the living room. The gun is apparently a .380 caliber semi automatic handgun.

The child had been playing a Wii game. The game's controller, according to authorities, was shaped like a gun that looked very similar to the real handgun. The authorities claim the girl "pulled the gun off the table and it went off."

No charges have been filed in the case.

We advise parents concerned about their child's safety regarding Wii hardware to consult Nintendo's Wii safety page.

You know, I think this is less about her confusing a real gun with a Wii peripheral and more about bad parents leaving firearms in a child's reach :|

I can't wait for people to blame the Wii instead of the Stepfather leaving a gun around and the parents buying a game for a 3 year old that involves a gun.

This is a three year old, thats not natural selection. It would be if it was someone who was smart enough to tell the difference.

That's despicable. You always keep your gun in a locked and secure place. Not laying on the table with your daughter running around.

What a shame.

The wii gun looks way too similar, it's like asking for it to happen... Wow Nintendo are even dumber than I though. No idea how she managed to shoot herself while picking up the gun unless she picked it the wrong way, which doesn't make much sense.

wow- the child is not stupid, 3 year olds have a very hard time understanding they can get hurt from anything... let alone a gun, I can see why she was mistaken, you also have to realize that she probably couldn't tell the difference between the gun and the controller because the table was probably taller that her.

that guy should win the stupidest douche father of the year award. who the hell leaves a gun on the table when there's a 3 year old in the house? oh ya, some hick from tennessee.

The real gun weighs over a pound. The toy gun weighs a few ounces. Even a toddler can differentiate between differently weighted objects.

This is the part that really gets me. The jerk left a gun on a table in plain reach of a 3 year old kid, loaded and, I'm assuming, safety off, right next to a toy that looks like a gun. The mother was in the room with the kid and didn't notice that and think to herself, "Hmmm, maybe that's dangerous." These people are patently unfit as parents, I hope if they have any other kids someone has the common sense to take them away until they learn how to NOT LEAVE A DANGEROUS WEAPON WITHIN REACH OF A ****ING THREE YEAR OLD!!!

The mother's even worse. She was sitting there, watching this unfold. Forgetting to put something away is one thing... but watching your daughter pick up a gun and point it at herself.... how do you not react?

Toddlers haven't developed enough reasoning to make that differentiation. When they're at that stage in life they can't make complex evaluations of subtle differences, they only know that this looks like the toy in the living room, therefore it must be the same as the toy in the living room.

She probably picked it up with it facing her and her thumb pulled the trigger as she struggled to get a good grip. Too bad it wasn't facing sideways towards the mother.
