Opinions on closing the prison have changed little since 2009

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Look at that, who says there isn't any bi-partisan consensus among Americans? Inmates in Gitmo should be either be tried, transferred or released as soon as possible. They should not, however, be transferred to US prisons. What say you OT?

Ugh, I wonder how many of these Americans even know what Gitmo is. And I actually agree with you for once; prisoners should be tried, transferred or released (though I don't necessarily agree with releasing them to their own countries--some may be killed or taken political prisoner upon return).

Guantanamo needs to be closed. Pretty sure that most of the detainees in gitmo have been scheduled for release but have just been sitting there for years for whatever reason. The rest should be tried, as should Dubya, Vader, Rummy, Gonzo and friends =]

Don't feign ignorance. The reason is political, your boy Obama polls tests everything he does and he knows where the wind blows. And now after the Bergdahl deal, the political landscape has further deteriorated.

Don't be an Obama apologist master, you're better than that

Justice isn't something we get to decide by democracy. Polling is irrelevant. You might as well have a poll about whether one group of people should be granted the same rights as another group of people. We don't know what percentage of Americans feel that blacks shouldn't have the same rights as whites ,or that women shouldn't have the same rights as men, because pollsters wouldn't have the nerve to ask such an obscene question in this day and age. This is an equally obscene question to subject to the whims of the public, and it's appalling that they fail to recognize this.

Everyone should be entitled to due process and a fair trial, regardless of where they came from. We don't get to decide when we're going to do that and when we're not. You don't just lock people up and throw away the key and tell everyone they were bad men and terrorists.

Polling is irrelevant.

It isn't when it guides, or at the very least informs, what the President does.

Aye, but is it accurate?

It can be fairly accurate. Depends on the methodology, sample size, etc.

That doesn't make what he does, or in this case what he doesn't do, right. Moreover I'm very skeptical as to how informed the average person is when it comes to the war crimes committed at this facility, seeing as how this is an issue that is rarely covered in American media.

No response as to the reason for why these polls are very possibly a misleading portrayal of public opinion?

Also I think you're overstating the case for how important these public opinion polls actually are when policy is crafted.

For example, in early 2009 a majority of Americans claimed to support an investigation into the allegations of torture during the Bush administration. Obama didn't only not make an effort to launch this investigation but he actually went out of his way to prevent any investigation or prosecution from taking place. There's a wide discrepancy on a countless number of issues between what the public supports and the actual political agenda in DC.

Keep it open. Close it. I'm not American, so I'm indifferent.

Yeah I can't say I have any interest in letting known terrorists step foot in the continental US.
