I wouldn't say I'm a hip hop hater, its just have I've grown up and my culture around me. I have been raised listening to pink floyd and neil young, not stuff like this. Although I do respect that it is still music, and well written music at that. The lyrics can be very poetic which is something that appeals to me in hip hop. More-less the older stuff than the newer mainstream stuff. The only rapper I listen to often is Kayne West, I appreciate who he is as a person, and what he brings to the hip hop scene.

Eh, I wasn't a fan of any of those. The only rap I can stand is when metal fuses with it. Anthrax's I'm the Man is the perfect example.

i also was raised on the rock clasiccs and still do love them(doors, floyd, zeppelin, etc) , i only started gaining interest in hip hop once i started discovering these great hip hop artists/groups(thank you internetzz!) and once i discovred "real" hip hop, i kept searching and discovering more and more and fell in love with the genre

its just unfortunate that whatever is played on the radio or mtv and whatnot is big representation(and not a good one) of hip hop to alot of todays kids/teens

The Pete Rock song and the K-otix song were pretty cool.

Rap/hip-hop isn't really my thing but I don't hate it or anything. I only hate how overrun it is with BAD artists. I think all the crap artists out there show just how HARD it is to make GOOD rap.

Here are some rap songs I like:
Eminem-Kill You (He is the one rap artist I listen to consistently. His old stuff never gets old)

NWA-Express Yourself

Jay-Z-99 Problems

lol i guess im just a living contradiction. i grew up on jazz and classical music and musicals. now i listen to mainly hip hop, techno, and metal.

to be honest i didnt really like any of the songs you put up. ive never been a fan of the old school kind of hip hop, then again, im not really sure what i like fits into.

i listen to cunning lynguists, swollen members, flobots, danger mouse, pharcyde, and chicarones out of my rap collection if that gives you any indication of what i like.

Kanye West

Lil Scrappy

Lil Wayne

Lloyd Banks

Ludacris

Lupe Fiasco

Plies

Rick Ross

Snoop Dogg (older stuff)

TI

Trick Daddy

Young Buck

Young Dro

Young Jeezy

Yung Joc

It's all I got, and I am always lookin for more. Some are for more lyrical rap, like Em and Pac, and others usually have great beats with ok lyrics.

Yeah, I liked the first song by a tribe called quest. I think that was the most creative song out of all of them.

That's a lot of mainstream rap. I like it too, but obviously it's not going to win over anybody on a thread targetted at trying to convince rap haters to listen to more rap.

I agree mostly, except TI. A lot of the albums I have I only find around half is good each album, and the rest meh. Namely Birdman. But a disagreement with you, I find Kanye very overrated on these boards, and I am starting to think people here just like... bad MCs.

Yeah, even most of the new rap I like these days could hardly be considered fun music, but I guess that's true for most genres now. Anyways, nice picks.

I watched a couple of the links you posted, doesn't sound any different than the much I'm forcibly subjected to every time I go to work out at the local gym. I just don't care much for listening to people who can't sing or play instruments trying to pass themselves off as musicians.

I like oldskool hiphop with the real message. Nowadays it's mostly (luckily not all) about the girls, money, jewelry, gangsters and cars, which I find terribly childish. I'm mostly into electronic music btw. Things I really like: Aphex Twin - OnKen Ishii - Game OverUnderworld - Push UpstairsGoldie - Innercity LifeOrbital - Funny BreakFuture Sound of London - CascadeSquarepusher - Come on My SelectorRoni Size - Dirty BeatsJonny L - Piper

Didnt know you had to do one of these to be a muscian.

I can give you many rap lyrics where no song from any other genre can even touch them, you know what I will.

Now I ain't tryna be the greatest
I used to hate hip-hop... yup, because the women degraded
But Too $hort made me laugh, like a hypocrite I played it
A hypocrite I stated, though I only recited half
Omittin the word Bi*** cursin I wouldn't say it
Me and dog couldn't relate, til a Bi*** I dated
Forgive my favorite word for hers and hers alike
But I learnt it from a song I heard and sorta liked
Yeah, for the icin, glamorized drug dealin was appealin
But the block club kept it from in front of our buildin
Gangsta rap-based filmings became the buildin blocks
For children with leakin ceilings catchin drippins with pots
Coupled with compositions from Pac, Nas's "It Was Written"
In the mix with my realities and feelings
Living conditions, religion, ignorant wisdom and artistic vision
I began to jot, tap the world and listen, it drop

My mom can't feed me, my boyfriend beats me
I have sex for money, the hood don't love me
The cops wanna kill me, this nonsense built me
And I got noooo place to gooo
They bomb my village, they call us killers
Took me off they welfare, can't afford they health care
My teacher won't teach me, my master beats me
And it huuurts meee soooul

I had a ghetto boy bop, a Jay-Z boycott
'Cause he said that he never prayed to God, he prayed to Gotti
I'm thinkin godly, God guard me from the ungodly
But by my 30th watchin of "Streets is Watchin"
I was back to givin props again and that was botherin
By this uncomfortable as a untouchable touchin you
The theme songs that N***** hustle to seem wrong but these songs was comin true
And it was all becoming cool
I found a condom on the ground that Johns would cum into and thought
What constitutes a prostitute is the pursuit of profit then they drop it
The homie in a suit pat her on the butt, then rock it
It seems I was seein the same scene adopted
Prevalent in different things with the witnesses indifferent to stop it
They said don't knock it, mind ya business
His business isn't mine and that N***a pimpin got it

They took my daughter, we ain't got no water
I can't get hired, they cross on fire
We all got suspended, I just got sentenced
So I got noooo place to gooo
They threw down my gang sign, I ain't got no hang time
They talk about my sneakers, poisoned our leader
My father ain't seen me, turn off my TV
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

So through the Grim Reaper sickle sharpening
Macintosh marketing
Oil field augering
Brazilian adolescent disarmament
Israeli occupation
Islamic martyrdom, precise
Yeah, laser guided targeting
Oil for food, water, and terrorist organization harborin
Sand camouflage army men
CCF sponsorin, world conquerin, telephone monitorin
Louis Vuitton modelin, pornographic actress honorin
String theory ponderin, bullimic vomitin
Catholic priest fondlin, pre-emptive bombin and Osama and no bombin them
They breakin in my car again, deforestation and overloggin and
Hennessy and Hypnotic swallowin, hydroponic coughin and
All the world's ills, sittin on chrome 24-inch wheels, like that

They say I'm infected, this is why I injected
I had it aborted, we got deported
My laptop got spyware, they say that I can't lie here
But I got noooo place to gooo
I can't stop eatin, my best friend's leavin
My pastor touched me, I love this country
I lost my earpiece, I hope y'all hear me
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

Alright TC as someone who's not exactly a fan of rap, here's my honest opinion. I didn't listen to the lyrics, but I'm not one of those idiot rap haters who just assumes it's all about gangs and hoes and drugs and such (though there IS some truth behind every stereotype). I've also heard a lot that a lot of the less mainstream stuff is better than what we hear on the radio, but since I don't listen to rap I wouldn't know.

As for the stuff you posted, I found it a bit more tolerable than most of the stuff you hear on the radio (and needless to say leagues better than Soulja Boy), but I just can't stand the sound of hip hope music. It's just not for me, personal preference. Everyone has every right to dislike what ever they want, which I know you understood. Even though I can't stand rap music, this is a welcome change from the ordinary "Wow rap is terrible" thread we get around here.

If you're curious, the main two things that I don't like are the electronic beats and sound (which is basically the whole music part),which just don't sound good IMO, and the way that rappers don't sing but just chant the lyrics. Singing is a major part of music and requires a good amount of skill (I would know, I'm in the choir), but IMO chanting is just saying the lyrics to the beat and doesn't require too much talent. That's just me though, to each his own.

i listened to the first link. my biggest problem with rap is that they play the same beat over and over again. that alone gets boring well before the song's 3:30ish run time(honestly, keeping it interesting for 3 and half minutes cant that big of a task). but to be fair, i have this complaint with a lot of metal bands too(though none that i continually listen to). my issue with rap is that there arent any exceptions that ive heard. they all either play the same beat through the song or stick to the verse, chorus, verse, chorus formula which gets boring.

as for the lyrics, they revolve around a hip hop culture that im not interested in. i really dont care about their critiques on an music industry whos product i dont listen to.

my advice is that you dont try to "convert" people to your music of choice. why should it matter what other people think about it? if you enjoy it, then that all that matters. it would seem shallow if other people's enjoyment of music effected another's enjoyment of it.

Well if you don't like the sound you must not be a fan of funk, soul, or jazz either because the A Tribe Called Quest song posted uses a straight loop from Minnie Riperton's "Baby, This Love I Have" which is a soul song and the Pete Rock & CL Smooth song posted uses a loop from Tom Scott's "Today" which is a jazz-fusion piece. Just pointing that out. The songs the topic creator posted are very heavily funk and soul influenced...

Singing is a major piece of music, but it is not necessary though. Many funk songs do not have singing and rely just on voices and chanting to further rhythm and melody. Heck, James Brown used to just grunt on a record and it would sound good.
