My favorite authors are stephen king and George R R martin, stephen king because he writes the best horror books around and also writes great non horror. He also writes some of the best short stories around. George R R martin is great because he has written one of the best fantasy books ever made and some other great books. He is great with words and metaphors.

I have to say Williams Shakespeare since I learned so much from him.-DarthMaul-

He write's plays though, yes the same as a book and all, but still, I don't know if he counts, he is an EXCELLENT playwright though, I've also learned a crapload from the guy in english classes, we read quite a bit of his plays.

I'm kind of surprised no one has said George Orwell, I love his books, and I've only read 2 (yes, 1984 and Animal Farm.)

Chuck Palahniuk. His work is amazing. He wrote the novel for Fight Club, which in turn created the movie. I loved Stranger Than Fiction:True Stories as well.

To be honest, I haven't read many books -- which means that I only have two favorite authors: Haruki Murakami and Kurt Vonnegut. However, I want to start reading more books the way I listen to more music and watch more movies; that's why I started last month with Haruki Murakami's The Wind Up Bird Chronicle.

J.K. Rowling, William Shakespeare, T.S. Eliot, Barack Obama, Edgar Allan Poe....

Least favorite: Any Puritan, Thoreau, Emerson...eh...I can't see why Thoreau and Emerson are supposedly "great"...We're dealing with them in my Am Lit class now, and I haven't read any of their essays completely...They are not only difficult, but annoying to read, and they read like some super smart guy ranting about how he knows what everyone else should do...

I really don't read much, but my favorite book is Lord of the Rings, so I guess I'll go with Tolkien.
