Given the quality of public education over here, private schools are definitely the way to go.

It depends on how good of a school they'd go to if they went public. If they went to a high budget/high standard public school, then I'd let them go there. But if they were going to a sub-par school, I'd send them to a non-religious private school.

I think they'll learn more about life and working hard if they go to a public school like me.

Catholic high school wouldn't be bad, it's what I went to.

Just want to let people know that the education systems in Canada are different from American education. At least in Ontario, Catholic high schools aren't tuition-based as they may be in the US. Provincially funded, we don't pay a dime directly.

Public.

Why pay for private when you can find a good public school and get the same quality education?

I'm not sure. I come from public school and even though I feel parts of my education suffered because I went to one I also feel I walked away with more because I had to deal with a wide variety of social situations and problems that come with going to a school filled to the brim with people you don't like and I would like my child to be able to experience those same situations.

A lot of my friends who went to private school came away smart and well spoken/educated but they really have no experience in many situations. Every school differs but this is pretty consistent in my friends who came from different private schools.

If I'm lucky enough to have kids, it'll be private for them. It's so much better in almost everyway, and I say that from personal experience.

This makes a difference too. Some public schools in the US have better programs for students depending on the district.

It depends on the quality of the public school. If the teachers and other students there are decent, then that's the option I would go with. Private schools tend to have some unfair and rather stupid rules, so I would stay away from those. If the public schools were crappy, then home schooling or independent studies is fine too. I think it should be up to the kid though, as long as I could afford all options.

Private with religion. I don't need my kids around those pot heads and gang bangers in public schools. Plus I want them to have a better education.

Sorry to break it to you but drugs are rampent in private schools in well.. One would say even more so than public schools, seeing as kids are far richer to which they can buy the product... Often times I remember my friend saying (who attended both private and public schools) that it was way easier to score drugs in the private school than it was in the public school.

It would just depend on the situation and the kid. Example, my parents planned on all three of us kids to go to public schools, and my older sister graduated from one, but I'm graduating from a charter school and my little brother is diabetic so he's doing public. If it wasn't for his Type One Diabetes, though he'd be at a charter school too. Just depends on the situation at the time.

To add on to my post Private school is vastly superior to public school if you can afford it. They bend over backwards to get you into the university you want and they have superior facilities if you get into a good one. Academic competition is high and it keeps your kids intelligent and on their feet. It's great and as much as I may hate it, I love it for what it does for me.

I'd like my kids to go to public schools. The education in them is fine, and most of the time a lot better than the private schools round here. I'd want my kids to be mixed with a variety of people - not just kids whose can afford private school.

My public high school was one of the top schools in the state. TBH we were probably better than most of the private schools in the area, especially if the fact that our Academic Bowl team won the state championship my last year there and had always placed in the final rounds each year prior (keep in mind the teams we competed against were from both public and private schools). Most kids went to good schools and the ones in the top ranks of the class typically went to schools like Yale, Northwestern, Emory, etc. Hell, I go to Emory right now and there's at least five other people going there from my senior class alone. Walking on campus is like a ****ing high school reunion for me.

Public school can be just as good as private if your kids go to school in the right area. Unless the public schools in my area sucked I would send my kids to public school. If the schools did suck then I would put them in private. However, I'd personally prefer to save the mountain of cash that I would pay in high school tuition for their college tuition instead. It would be pretty stupid if my kid went to a great private high school but then had to settle for an average state university because I didn't have enough cash to blow on a world-renowned university.

Public school. Not only are they free to learn a secular education that promotes tolerance and open-mindedness, but they will receive a proper social education as well among their peers.

Private school is as secular as it gets if you want it to be, mine is also very open minded. We have a conservative club, a liberal club, a political debate club, a model united nations club, an anti-racism organization, and a debate team (of course). Not to mention we get a great social education, it's not like being around girls helps people socially anyway. From the people I've seen on Gamespot, public school does them no good in that regard ( Just kidding  )

Many private schools are religious-based. When my children learn about religion, they will learn about it from me. They go to school to learn all the basic necessities to function in secular society (math, science, language, writing, reading, social studies and physical education). Religion is a private matter meant for our home, not a school (unless it is religious studies at the university level).

Also, many private schools are single-gendered, where a "proper" social education would be impossible, since there would be a very huge gap in their experiences with the opposite sex. Hell, I went to public school and I had very few experiences with the opposite sex, going to a male-only school would have only made things worse.

As far as I assume the definitions for Private and Public are similar in America as here in Australia, but there are some differences. I'm attending a private Catholic school (ugh) but I'll probably send mine to a regular private school as I probably wont baptise my children.

The role religion plays in a private school is certainly not as big as people make it out to be TBH. The private school I went to only had one half an hour chapel service a week and they don't exactly try to force religion down your throat. If your not a christian no-one will ever say you are wrong for believing this or anything. Probably varies on the school tbh.

This is a huge misconception. You'll find that in an all boys school that they will often organise activites with other girl schools so that you get to meet and get to know other girls. Most people at an all boys school usually socialise with girls outside of school quite easily.

You seem to have a very stereotypical view of a private school. I mean I go to a private school now, and it is co-ed, no uniform and no religion. Just because its a private school doesn't mean it will have religion etc.

It would depend on the schools in the area where I lived but I would prefer private. I attended a religious based private school and it was way better than public school. Religion wasn't shoved down your throat and the environment and level of education where vastly superior to public.

lol I don't have to go to an hour chapel service a week or anything. We have morning prayer that goes for maybe 2 minutes and a school mass once a term thats the first 3 periods. We used to have a ***** mass once a year but I'm in year 11 now so I don't think they do it for 11 and 12. Mines co-ed but with uniform and RE is compulsory, but you just take ethics which is a major bludge and you spend the year watching films and talking about the ethical issues in them.

It's not hard at all, if you have any kind of social life worth having you'll meet plenty of girls within private school. Hell I'm in an all boys private school and I know many girls and I even have a girlfriend. Thing is, an all boys school is a blessing. I am far more comfortable learning around guys and I'm not trying to impress anyone, none of us are. We just live how we would as guys without fear of trying to impress girls. And private schools for the last time are as secular as you want them to be, hell most of my school is either athiest or agnostic.

I'd send my children to a state school, with extra tuition. I don't want my kids spending too much time around rich kids and snobs - it would give them a warped sense of what's important.

Bizarrely enough, 'public schools' is what we call the most selective private schools in England.

Half an hour, not an hour. Yeah RE was also compulsory at my old school, but it wasn't really religion either. More like ethics. All we did for a whole semester was watch the matrix trilogy lol. I don't know what benefit watching the matrix trilogy would've given us but it was pretty fun

I'd send my children to a state school, with extra tuition. I don't want my kids spending too much time around rich kids and snobs - it would give them a warped sense of what's important.

Bizarrely enough, 'public schools' is what we call the most selective private schools in England.

I can already tell you've never been to a private school. Serioulsy 99.9% of people at private schools are fine. Its almost as stupid as saying everyone who goes to a public school is a druggie

I went to a Catholic high school, so I guess I'd want to continue to tradition. I'd honestly let my kid choose though. It's their years, so why force him/her to go somewhere they don't? Unless they choose a school with rampant crime, then no, I get to choose :P

We are all druggies. I've met a lot of people from private schools in England, and I can tell you that basically all of them have rich parents, and a lot of them are also snobs. Maybe things are different in America.

I've been to both private and public schools and the kids were more or less the same. No rich snobs in the private school and no violent druggies in the public ones. Now if you go to some ultra-elite academy that charges more in tuition than Harvard, then yeah, it's probably filled with rich snobs. Likewise, if you go to an inner city school in America a lot of the kids are going to be disrespectful and violent. But ignoring those two extremes, private schoolers aren't much different than public schoolers.
