Just came back from picking up a pizza, and the place had a "tips" jar out front at the register. Staff gave me nasty looks because I didn't tip anything. However, I refuse to tip for anything I pick up or carry out. That's not a tippable service in my opinion.

I tip generously when at a sit down restaraunt, I tip the delivery guy, I tip the maids at a hotel, taxi drivers, etc. but I dont believe you tip at a carryout place. Actually, most places with tips jars are usually begging for tips from services that are generally not regarded at tippable.

What are your thoughts?

Not out of habit, but sometimes if I'm feeling generous. Maybe %50 of the time?

It's certainly not something I think you should feel obligated to do, though.

Staff gave me nasty looks because I didn't tip anything.

I think that might be in your head. Or perhaps you gave them another reason to give you a "nasty look".

Some pizza places refuse tips for carry-out (Papa Johns I believe). I work at a successful, popular non-chain pizza place and it's rare will I see someone tip for a take-out. Hell - I don't see that many people who eat in tip either, and they are being serviced (we bus the tables for them, check up on them etc.). We have regulars who always tip but I'd say at least half don't.

People get the idea that everyone's counting tips or expecting tips. If you're in a traditional situation where you're being waited on - you should tip. Waiters need tips. Otherwise I don't see the point. Nobody's going to cry that they didn't get a tip on a take-out order. In fact, I'd be extremely surprised if a single staff member there thought anything of it. The only time we've been disappointed about not receiving a tip was on a $200+ take-out order. So if you're doing some insane take-out order, then you should tip. But it's not like we put their name down on a list or something...

Nope, never. I only tip for sit-down restaurants.

tips are for services. When you pick up an order to take out, they are providing a product, not a service. So no, I don't tip for take out.

Unless they're super friendly and my order is ready right away.

But generally no.

I would say to only tip on take out or carry out if you order a very large order. Something pretty expensive such as ordering a couple sheet pizzas for a birthday party or something would make sense. Don't be like this one guy I know that'll tip any attractive girl extreme amounts of money they see even when it's a buffet where you serve yourself. If you're at a restaurant though where someone is giving you refills whenever you need them and are checking up on you often, then you should leave a decent tip for sure.

If a place is delivering to you and the pizza or Chinese food isn't cold, always be sure to give an appropriate tip. If you use your own car to pick something up, you're the one paying for your own gas so they don't really deserve a tip unless you're a regular and want to thank them for consistent service out of the goodness of your heart. That's still all personal preference though.

Nope, if I'm going to give away money it will be for charity; these people have a job and are getting paid.

I don't like tipping in the first place, whether implied/obligatory or not. People in the service industry should make enough wage/salary that they don't need to hold out a hand in expectation of more for being good at their job.

Yes, I tip, even though I don't believe in tipping! And even though I am completely free to not tip, I still tip anyway and then complain about how people are asking for free money!

Why tip the delivery guy? When I was a parts runner in high school it wasn't like the mechanics tipped me for bringing them parts and it's practically the same job.

If they carry it out to my car so I don't have to get out, sure, especially when the the weather is bad or cold.

Nah, I've worked there and in-store workers will gladly take carry-out tips. It's never expected for people to do so though.

I don't tip for carry-out, just for delivery drivers, waiters, etc.

Then it might be based on owner's policy, because my local Papa J's definitely says "We don't accept tips for take-out orders. Thank you". There's no tip-jar or anything like that either. I like the policy - it's less confusing.

Wouldnt make sense to.

Tipping should be abolished anyways.

But in the case of carry out, lol **** no. (Unless they did some extra for you or of that sort, thats really the only time tipping should be acceptable)

I tip for delivery and for waiters, but not for takeout. I already paid for them to make the food, so I dont think I should have to pay more money for literally no reason.

I do feel like you when i dont' tip, although they dont' give me a nasty look, lol .. I can't imagine why you would tip, if you already bought their products to begin with, instead of going somewhere else.

You realize waiters make practically nothing(or at least they did 20 years ago when I waited tables) and literally live off of tips?

Not in Canada they don't. They make minimum wage, which is $10.70 CAD here. Tipping "culture" in the US is a nightmare. Service industry folk *should* be making minimum wage so that tips aren't necessary. If the restaurant owner has to integrate that price into the cost of the food, then so be it. Tips should be a reward for hard work, not obligatory because the waiter/waitress doesn't get paid enough by their employer.

EDIT: I went on a trip to New Orleans this past Christmas and everyone down to the people performing on the street were always holding out their hand for a "tip" and there was always an atmosphere of obligation on our part. As a polite Canadian is was an easy way to part with money rather quickly.

If the service is great rather it's take-outs, delivery, waiters, barbers, ect. I leave a tip at the very least like $3 dollars for the most parts so yeah, I tend to leave a tip when I can.
