Many people, both religious and non religous, believe that eating meat is morally wrong.

I for one believe that we have the power and right to manipulate them into a source of vital nutrients, as the superior species of this world.

And you, OT?

Just like how I should be able to eat people that I'm superior to. Tasty animals and people.

If eating meat was "wrong", one would imagine that there wouldn't be so many carnivorous animals in nature.

For me, eating meat not grilled nor fried is okay if you eat it within the appropriate amount. Also, I believe eating meat is also considered wrong if the source of a certain type of meat is rare, since the animals are risking extinction due to overhunting because for meat and other things used as tools.

If eating meat is wrong, so is eating plants. They both are alive, after all. The point of nature is to fight or become a meal so other species can survive. I think the "morals" thing comes from people who forgot how nature runs things.

Um...yeah. :|

Humans are omnivorous animals, meaning we eat both animals (meat) and plants (vegetables).

Sure, an alligator biting the leg of a wildebeest and dragging the whole animal into the water is much more humane than a human slaughtering a cow with a machete.

I'll never understand these people who think eating meat is "wrong". I don't understand vegetarians and vegans (WTF is the difference between the two?) because...

...

...
how the flying **** can they live off only vegetables?:o:?
EDIT: It's really annoying when people bring up morals and ethics to topics like this; seriously. Humans eating meat is NATURAL.

I don't think eating meat is in and of itself morally wrong, but I think that the unethical slaughtering of them in such a way that they might feel an immense amount of pain is indeed wrong.

Kinda depends on who you are. Plants are (mostly) all peaceful and live and let live; they don't need to deprive others of sustenance to survive. It's only we animals who for whatever reason felt we had to be jerks to everyone as a part of life. :P

I don't want it to be wrong.

Given that I as a human being, evolved to be an omnivore, I will continue to eat meat until the day I die. And honestly, given a survival situation, I wouldn't think twice about resorting to cannibalism (i.e. the kind that doesn't involve murder, see: Alive (1993 film)).

Well cannibalism does have other non-moral issues to it, such as the fact that if you're in a situation where cannibalism is necessary, it would also be probably rather difficult to ensure that the meat is in any way sanitary.

(Although I suppose if the other option is dying from starvation...)

To play devil's advocate, the difference is that (some) animals are argued to be sentient beings.

On the other hand, cannot recall anyone ever saying the same for plants.

Which is why I mentioned a survival situation. Either I eat human flesh or die. I honestly wouldn't have anything against eating it... nothing more than I do against eating the flesh of any other animal. I just wouldn't go out of my way to find myself in such a situation (with regards to any animal either). I would like to try bow hunting though, and learn how to use every part of the carcass.

We also have no idea if beings like Ents exist... so to argue "sentience" as a line between morally wrong and right doesn't seem logical. For all we know, tomatoes could be sentient, and we just don't understand or perceive their means of communication. I personally think the "sentience" argument to be largely hypocritical, as an animal must openly display "thoughts" or "feelings" in order to escape slaughter... but "dumb" animals? Slice-n-dice 'em.

I like the "animals are life, plants are life" argument. No matter what, we can't escape destroying life for sustenance. Unless of course we live off dairy like some sadhus in India purportedly do.

All I know is that it's an extremely inefficient use of caloric consumption. It's also impractical in terms of being sustainable as population levels increase, and is one of the major causes of our planets deteriorating ecosystem. And.. the one reason we wont do anything about it.. is because of privatized business and easily influenced population that doesn't use rational thought in order to guide their deceision making

. The concept of supply and demand.. though practical in terms of sustainable economics centralized around capitalism.. is not practical in terms of human behavior. What is demanded.. is not what is necessary, sustainable, or efficient. Food addiction is another problem that should be considered with this behavior as well. Foods are loaded with sodium, and sugars.. not because it's necessary to do this.. but because a company can get consumers addicted to them.. and they will have more cravings for a companies food, and the company will then make more money. Food tastes fine without these things.. but people are so over exsposed to them that they dont' know better. And have a hard time identifying the behavior because ignorant parents feed them this way from an early age.

I can't really comment on whether or not eating meat is morally right. Though I can conceptualize the concepts of good and evil.. I've yet to discover their application in the reality of the physical world.. in other words.. they're simply ideas applied by humans to assign or asses the value of something. Because for some reason or another it's in our nature to be obessed with measuring and quantifying.

Too many posts for individual replies. :P Morals is up to the law and each individual. I won't argue either or. So I leave it up to you all and the law to decide that little dispute. :P Cannibalism, after all the rights and wrongs of life, is just subjective. Humans made right and wrong, according to a variety of peeps, so I won't say if it's morally wrong to eat other humans or not. =p

I can understand not eating meat because you don't like it, or don't like the way animals are treated. However, the argument for not eating animals as being morally wrong because you are taking life, is just silly and illogical. We need to consume some sort of energy, and until we develop chlorophyll, that taking in of energy has to come through living creatures. "Living creatures" includes plants as well as animals. By eating your carrots, you are taking a life.
