This has been a question I've wanted to ask for a while. It's hard to tell where people are from on this board, and I'd just honestly like to know if people here prefer an urban or a rural environment.

I, myself, couldn't imagine living in the city. I mean, yeah, it's good for convenience sake, being a short distance away from most commodities, if the power is knocked out, it's generally turned back on fairly quickly (a storm 2 years ago blew my power out for more than a week), and other things I can't think of at the moment, but it comes with plenty of disadvantages as well.

I'm originally from a small city in Western PA, and while living there I was almost mugged, witnessed drug deals, and my grandmother's bar was the victim of armed robbery (I lived in an apartment right upstairs). The noise outside at night was insane, I didn't have much room outside to play, and there was a streetlight directly outside my window, preventing me from sleeping easily.

When I was 6, we moved to a small village of roughly 300 people and things were quieter, friendlier, and just generally more relaxing. Sure, we had to drive 10 miles or more to get to a store, but it was a nice existence. When I was 10, we moved to an old farm 6 miles outside of town. To me, this place is paradise. It's secluded, out closest neighbors are across rows and rows of corn, I was free to go out and explore the surrounding property (state game lands. NEVER go on a farmers property without their permission), and it's always quiet. A walk for people in the suburbs or a city is to go out, round a block, say hi to a neighbor or two, then be home within 15-20 minutes. A walk for me is a 4-6 mile excursion through back roads and forests, and if I see someone else, it usually turns into me walking and talking with them for a half-hour, discussing sports, hunting, or whatever else. I also don't have the general complaints about living out here. My internet is fast, I live about a mile from the nearest town, and my closest friend is right down the hill from me. All in all, I just prefer the quiet life out in the country.

Before a year ago I always could have said that I prefer living in a city. I enjoy the constant activity and multitude of people that cities inherently bring. However, I am beginning to appreciate small town life.

After visiting Hong Kong (arguably the city of cities), I gotta say my heart belongs in the city.

I've spent most of my life living in the countryside.

Large cities are far too hectic for me. They're good to visit, but I could never live in one.

Lived in the country my whole life, there's no place I'd rather be. Cities are nice and fun to visit, but I'll take the open land and freedom that country provides over that any day. (I almost sound like a country singer.)

I would like to live out in the country for the large property and privacy but I can't live without the utilities and paved roads.

Suburb, I dislike how tech and activity deprived (movies, restaurants, shopping etc. because I greatly enjoy those things, not that there aren't activities to do in the country) country life is, but I also hate how crowded city life is. Suburb is the happy medium to me.

The city, as I'm still young and active. When I become a bit more laid back and older in the bones.... I can see myself taking in the country life.

Country as long as it's not too far out. I need to still have easy access to grocery stores and a Walmart or something. I also love suburbs. I'd rather die than live in the city (aka downtown).

That's how I was. When I was younger, I liked the city. Now I can't stand to even visit downtown.

Automobile dependency is one big reason why I dislike the suburbs and rural areas.

If I had to choose between country and city, I'd take city. Ideally I would like suburbs that are a really close drive to the city.

I lived in the country until 12 and then moved to a city where I am now. The former has more quiet and seclusion (which I like) but the latter provides anonymity (you' re a nobody in the city-you don' t know everybody like in the country). So I would prefer the suburbs.

i quite prefer small town living to city living.

i live in a nice small town. easy to get around, no annoying traffic and such to deal with. everyone knows everyone. i can go to the gas station to get booze or cigarettes and not have to pull out my ID as they all know me.

ive been to big cities and while i enjoy being in the big cities i dont want to live there. a nice visit is always good. going up to Chicago for thanksgiving with family, gonna be fun.

Definitely the city! Higher income, closer to the shops, don't need to drive far, don't need to wake up early, better paid job, easier to meet people etc...

The only problem is that I'm a cinema nut, and all my money goes to speakers and such. I already got a decent setup and its only getting better.. Will be hard to live in a city because apartments fvckin suck of right now I can't watch a movie without neighbours complaining, luckily I'm awake while they're at work (night shift)

But yeah, cities for me.

London, Dubai, New York, Chicago, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Tokyo. etc.. those are alpha cities.

I just don't know. See, I lived in a really rural area for most of my life and couldn't wait to get out. But then I missed it so much. However, now that I've moved back, all I've wanted to do is move back to a city.

Spent the first 18 years of my life in the country, but then I moved to a decent sized city for the next 3 years for college. They have their ups and downs. As a shut-in the general environment didn't make much of a difference. Small town traffic is a lot better cause I get stressed easily when driving. I also like how in the country nighttime tends to be quite and darker, and since I lived in a house out there I didn't have to worry about making noise that would distract neighbors. Only real plus in the city was that things were more conveniently located, but I have to say I prefer the country.

I prefer the countryside because;

1. Meats, poultry, fruits, and veggies are dirt cheap.

2. Some peace and quiet.

3. Good privacy

4. We can have wild and loud parties without the neighbors complaining.

5. No traffic jams to speak of.

Dislikes:

1. The drive to work and back.

2. The drive to shop and back.

3. Too many skunks and racoons for my tastes.
