I doubt that most of the UFO sightings are anything more than explanable phenomenon, from planes, to clouds, to planets, to satelites etc. Some of which will be 'top secret' planes and aircraft which will obviously be denied. Some of them will be aircraft that are experimental in nature and will not ever be acknowledged now or ever as they may never make mass production at any stage.
However, I have always thought that if mankind ever were to visit the nearest stars and their planets and to check for life, then it would first be done by automated probes. They would be able to go into the atomsphere and land, take samples, investigate up to a certain level and then to return to the mothership where the samples would be anlysed.
From the ground, these probes would appear as mysterious, they would not seek contact as they would not be sophsticated enough to do so and would simply do their tasks and return. I think that over the decades we have seen such probes but have not recognised them as such.
