A full-size working replica of the Titanic is to be built in China following an historic agreement between an Australian entrepreneur and a Chinese shipyard who are poised to sign a deal. The ship is expected to be finished in 2016 and will make a journey to the UK and then from Southampton to New York replicating the original voyage.

What do you think? Does it sound crazy?

I think the idea is just plain awesome. I hope they build it right though. It's not easy to build a ship 2 times bigger than the Titanic.

Hopefully they don't build it exactly, like it or it'll suffer from the same flaws as the original. I Wonder the extent of safety measure's they are taking for it.

That is really cool. I don't think I'd want to be on board though, just in case.

If they build the ship like their products (especially their vehicles), I wouldn't count on it faring any better than the first.

Actually there was a good reason for people thinking the titanic would be unsinkable. There were 3 ships of the class (Olympic-class ocean liners): The Olympic, the Titanic and the Brittania. The Brittania was sunk by a german sea-mine but the Olympic lasted a long while. And basically spent its life smashing into things. It smashed a few smaller ships early in its life when coming into port, a little later it collided with another ship, the HMS Hawke, and when it was commissioned for military use in World War I, it helped the war effort by basically ramming into other ships and sinking them. Some time after, in 1934 it collided with yet again another ship, killing 7 people from the other ship. Eventually during the great depression it was eventually scraped for parts and no longer smashed into other stuff. Yah... Thing was seriously badass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Olympic

People expecticing the same thing to happen to this one are ignorant of the differing conditions between 1912 and now. In fact international maritime laws in place now pretty much guarantee that what happened with the original Titanic couldn't happen again.

Almost all the major cruise ships are infinitely better. It's just an attraction. People will want to experience what it was like on board (pre drowning).

Didn't some European or American guy want to do the exact same thing and take it along the same historic path?  Either way, I approve, I'd like to see that

I've been inside some fully recreated rooms of the Titanic that even uses some original artifacts, and while we have bigger and better ships, there's nothing that compares to the sheer feeling of wealth and luxury of the titanic's stuff.

Some pics I took:

The interior is beautiful, no doubt. In terms of the actual ship though, it's 100 years old now. It's not a very impressive feat to recreate it. In terms of tech and things to do on today's ships, the titanic is a pretty interior and little more.

And ballast tanks that are actually sealed, so they don't just fill up one after another. And rivets that aren't made out of a type of metal that corrodes quickly in the presence of the metal the hull is made of. Also, are they replicating the original voyage, or the intended original voyage. That's an important difference.

you know, there's a economic reason the goods china builds are of low-quality...they could very well build something of high-quality if they wanted to

anyway, i think it would be cool to go on that replication voyage, but i image the tickets will be hella expensive

This almost comes across as poor taste. Its sort of cashing in on such a tradergy and loss of life. Nothing about the titanic is grand except the size of it. Even how it was built, it suffered from poor/cheap construction as well.

Sure it would be cool to see a replica made but the fact its going to do the same journey etc there just seems to be little respect for the people who lost their lives and in the manner they did.

Well the problem with the original Titanic was that it crashed into an iceburg. As long as they don't do that it will be fine.

You shouldn't really crash any ship into iceburgs.

Well it could have been avoided if the captain hadn't basically responded to the warning of iceburgs with "Iceburgs you say? Full speed ahead then!".
