ad·dic·tion

–noun

the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

I was always skepitcal about how someone can get literally ADDICTED to video games, until I installed World of Warcraft a month or two ago. Since then, it was the only thing I did on my days off- literally. I woke up, logged on, got a shower and ate (quickly), then got back on until I went to bed. I uninstalled the game and threw it away today, (bought Rock Band to make myself feel better lol). Well, what do you guys think? From a firsthand experience, I'd have to say yes.

I'm sure if one was to have an addictive mind; one could get addicted to videogames, but in that case one could get addicted to anything.

I am more addicted to GS than actual gaming, but I do my fair share. I think I used to be more addicted when I was in high school.

That's more of a hobby, I mean, if your house burned down and all your gaming crap burned up you'd probably be okay, just do other things. I never got hooked on a game like WoW, that was a totally different level..

It can happen, and it's not just MMORPG players. Anyone that doesn't study and play games could be addicts.

Who knows that one show.. Intervention. I wonder if there will ever be an episode where the person on there is literally addicted to gaming. I think it's possible.

Anything, I mean anything can become an addiction. Food, women, men, beer, gaming, money, etc.etc. It does not have to be a carcinogen (tobacco), drug, alcohol, etc.etc. Money is a huge addiction. We all need it. But sometimes enough is enough. When you are willing to kill or screw over somebody for it, it is an addiction. When you cannot spend a waking moment without gaming or thinking of a game like Evercrack, then it is an addiction.

There was a point in time where I was so fanatical about playing Starsiege Tribes that I wouldn't see the sun for weeks. If that's not addicition, I don't know what is.

I was addicted pretty bad when I was younger. Now that I'm in college, I sorta learned to keep it under control. That, and I found other things to do. :P

i thing only with MMOs like WoW, most gamers will beat a game on each difficulty to the end, but guess what happens when you take away all ending but the highest possible level?

Of course it's possible. I'm only mildly addicted but there are people who start sweating or shaking at the thought of games. That's serious.

"such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma." I don't know if this has been brought up yet... but if we want to look at definitions of addiction videogames can not be an addiction. Consider that many drugs... once discontinued... lead to physical withdrawl symptoms in the person... the reason why many drugs can meet the criteria of an "addiction." I agree that we can form very addiction-like habits with video games. With respect to the formal definitions... not an addiction

It would just mean you have an addictive personality...meaning that you could get addicted to absolutely anything...you have to draw the line somewhere

Under the right set of circumstances, I'd have to guess anything could become addictive... so, yes gaming addiction is possible.
