I just found out that four friends of mine--three of which are girls, one's a guy--are staying in the same dorm room at my university, or so they claim. Is that even allowed, and do you think it could be a problem? I could've sworn it was illegal or at least extremely rare: I read a news article a few years back about a guy and a girl rooming together at a university. Yes, it was a big enough deal to be all over the news.

They want me to visit sometime soon and I probably will today or tomorrow. This is something I just need to see for myself, to see if it's really happening. What do you make of this? Is this common, and could there be issues associated with it?

Most universities probably have policies against that sort of thing - at least in their own residences and dorms. I don't think mixed sex groups were allowed to share units at my university, although to be honest I never really checked (I just assume because I didn't see a single one).

I've shared apartments and townhouses with girls before, and I can see why universities might not sanction that sort of thing - it usally results in the roommates sleeping together. I don't have a problem with it (I shouldn't, I've done it) but they want to distance themselves from any potential legal issues.

edit - having said that, the dorm I was in for second year university was a mixed-gender dorm - however, it was split halfway down the building and each side has their own washrooms. The quads did not have mixed genders, as all four students were sharing what it essentially an apartment.

And other than the possibility of sex and the constant thought of hot lesbian encounters (they happen rarely), living with girls is not a picnic. I generally find them to be much worse roommates than guys - they're louder, more obnoxious, and strangely enough, aren't as clean in terms of how they keep their living space.

It's definitely possible at some colleges but I don't know how widespread it is. I personally know someone who's living with a guy next year at college. It's called gender-neutral housing and some colleges have it as an option.

I don't know about rooming together but they might be in the same building. In my dorm, girls are on one side and the guys are across the hall on the other.

Shouldn't you at least find out why he left before you make the switch? You don't want to live with a bunch of ball busters, do you?

On topic: It's rare but they exist. It's a lot easier to live with the opposite sex if you rent a house or get an apartment building on campus or even from the university.

I know you can at my university, but only for the suites or apartments, not the normal 2 or 3 person dorm rooms.

Depends on the school. As an example, in my seminary those of the opposite gender are only allowed in the apartment when there are at the least three people. Also, they are not allowed in the apartment at night. Personally I do not mind it and would have nothing against even more strict rules. However, there do exist some schools that might as well not even acknowledge gender by how their dorms are set up. In most cases I have seen such things show themselves as males and females living within the same suites but not actually being roommates.

Not really. If it is allowed it certainly is not common. There are guys dorms and girls dorms. Its been that way for a long time. Maybe some colleges do that now. I wouldn't mind being in place for that friend you speak of. But only if the 3 girls are hot. ;)

ugh I would hate to room with a girl. Kinda ruins the college experience.

unless she's a extremely down to earth, hot, bi-sexual, loose, drinks, open-minded, always bringing other hot girls over, experimenter type of girl, then maybe I'll reconsider.

My dorm is co-ed. That said, guys room on one side of the hall and girls room on the other. They don't allow guys to permanently share rooms with girls and vice versa.

some places do. some places dont. my dorms where small and hallways alternated boys and girls (only 8 people in each hallway.) and only a two story building. so it was more like a house. we all hung out together anyway.

well most colleges have apartment type houseing for upper classmen usually. It is bedrooms off of a central living space. That is probably what they are living in

Most girls are extremely messy, if you've ever had a sister you know what that's like. And unless it's your girlfriend or some average to below average girl i'm not sure why they'd want a guy unless he looked like brad pitt.

i actually read an article about 2 years ago where some universities were allowing it because some gay students felt more comfortable being roomates with a girl. im sure the option is more available now.

I've heard of sex-mixed dorms, but i've never seen it in the way that like your roommate is a member of the opposite sex.

when i was doing my bachelor degree, it was in downtown Milwaukee, so we had a 13 story dormitory, and the girls were on the 5th and 6th floor. If there were more girls that year they would end up getting paired in rooms on the guys floors. but again not with a guy as their roommate. If they had no roommate they got it as a single.

Doing my master's, i'm in the suites, so i got a single room but im also with three other guys. across the hall is the same set up but it's all girls. and then it alternates down the hall.

It all depends on the university, I would suggest just getting an apartment off of campus.

If the place is co-ed then I propose that weekly orgies are in order.
