Article here http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jul/07/brazilian-referee-decapitated-stabs-player Definately one of the most horrible things to ever happen in soccer, and I knew soccer fans were intense, but this is just crazy.

I think anyone who's played football has lost their head on the pitch at some point.

Hard to believe stuff like that still happens in the world, sports aside. Just goes to show you how far we still have to go as a species, in some ways.

Saw that in my local paper and could not process it.  Shit, just...holy shit.  I'll never make fun of Philly fans again.

Those fans are the dregs of the human race, killing over sports, how ridiculous.  Them and the ref, they're all scum.

This wouldn't have happened if futbol had replays and goal-line tech.

"Reports said that outraged spectators responded by running on to the field and stoning Da Silva, before severing his head and sticking it on a stake in the middle of the field."

South America and Mexico are sick places. This was not just one crazed person doing this but a whole crowd of people. Beheading a man. And they enjoyed it. And no one stopped it. Also a referee stabbing a dude is pretty screwed up too.

I saw the video on liveleak of the ref in the hospital.  They took his feet, arms and head off... the doctors were puzzled at what the hell happened

This seems appropriate:

Austin: Not a good time to lose one's "head".

Vanessa: Indeed.

Austin: That's not the way to get "ahead" in life.

Vanessa: No.

Austin: It's a shame he wasn't more "headstrong".

Vanessa: Hmm.

Austin: He'll never be the "head" of a major corporation.

Vanessa: Okay, that'll do.

Austin: Okay.

Meh, stuff like this happens in US sports. Remember when a roided up Barry Bonds attacked Ricky Bottalico after he got hit with an errant pitch?

Here's that fight for anyone who missed it:

This has reaffirmed by suspicion that Brazil is a terrible country to be in.

It shows that the criminals in question are nothing more than high-functioning savages, but they are not necessarily representative of the rest of humanity. There are many civilized individuals who would never even consider doing something like that.

It can be done. Have one person hold the head still, while the angry mob grabs the body and pulls very hard. Something similar was shown in Day Of The Dead (the Romero version) if you need a visual demonstration (just skip ahead to the last 15 mins.).

I would not use the fact that you saw it in a zombie movie as proof that it's possible, but I do agree than an angry mob could tear a man apart.

This is simply why I would not play soccer in a country in South or Central America. If you mess up it'll most likely mean your life. I think a Columbian WC player was assassinated when he returned home because he accidentally kicked an own goal which resulted in Columbia being knocked out.

I heard that the referee stabbed the player to death, and then the player's family and friends came for revenge and beheaded him,and then proceeded to Impale his head on a stick!

I don't think the whole croud attacked him though.

The freaking World Cup is there next year. They could care less about the Olympics next to the World Cup.

Last time it was held in Brazil was 1950. Brazil lost the finals match at home in one of the biggest upsets in sports history. It was a national crisis. Supposedly, there were mass suicides throughout Brazil after the game.

Could you imagine what'd happen if a referee made a bad call against Brazil in the world cup? He'd need Obama-type security to get out of the country alive
