the end of The Wicker Man just pissed me off. I didn't know what to think. The cop is gonna die and all those idiots are dancing and singing a stupid song. I thought I was going to break something.

The studio happy ending.
il-cattivo
I actually watched it just to see how it made Gilliam's own preferred ending that much more better.
given the fact that it's a comedy, the ending to Fat Albert is bleak. like you wouldn't expect a movie like that to have such a bleak ending.
pan's labyrinth-depends how you look at really, but thats my favorite part of the movie (despite being unintentional)
unforgiven
oldboy
synecdoche new york
no country for old men
planet of the apes-original (do i really need to specify?)
the wrestler
million dollar baby
barton fink
mulholland dr.
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Not bleak, but quite sad)
Saving Private Ryan
Star Wars 3 (REALLY bleak if you hadn't seen the originals beforehand)
BiCentennial Man was among the worst movies I've seen in my life. Honestly, so terrible. Bleak, I suppose, but not too sad. Just a bit depressing. Both for having wasted that amount of time, and the conclusion to the movie. XDBicentennial Man- after 200 yrs. and him turning from robot to human he dies
Boyz n da Hood- Ricky, whos about to get a scholarship gets shot n killed. Then his brother doughboy goes out lookin for the dudes that killed him and kills them all. Then 2 weeks later he dies lol
Yankees_Dynasty
Off the top of my head:
All of them had pretty sad endings.
Isn't it. I couldn't believe it when the movie ended. I wanted to punch somebody. The Mist. Its just a kick in the balls.
foxhound_fox
Pan's Labyrinth
Donnie Darko
Munich
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
The Last Samurai
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Star Wars Episode 3
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (sad)
The Matrix Revolutions had a sad ending

I loved the ending, it was bleak and depressing and we need more endings like it. THe Descent also had a great ending, well it did in the U.K at least. THey changed the ending to a happy one in the U.S for some stupid reason.
American History X. I honestly didn`t see that coming. Also, Apocalypse Now Redux had a perfect ending.
wait, alternate ending? ..that was the only ending my dvd had!one of my favourites would be one of the alternate endings to the butterfly effect where he strangles himself inside the womb as a selfsacrifice effort
VaguelyTagged
not sure i had a copy from thailand that has an alternate ending than the normal australian release instead of just ending his friendship with amy smarts character he kills himself in the womb its a much better ending i think.
also to buck_hotep why do you include the girl next door as having a bleak ending its like the happiest ending ever.
and the ending to the departed is very wtf but i loved it so much
The Terminator series... The Diehard series AVPBaconbits2004Yeah, the end of terminator 2 was kinda sad, when he died.
Idunno I really love and enjoy "sad" endings, especially the ones you listed Guy. Its hard for me to think of them as "sad" as well;
*spoilers, though ten year old or older they might be*
at the end of The Professional, I dont see that as a useless, sad death...I see that as a great, rightious sacrifice to save something nobler than himself. Martyrdom is a beautiful thing.
Even in Jacob's Ladder, where Robbins is suffering the entire movie, I find his acceptance of death (and thus peace, as stated by the medic that pronounced him dead) a beautiful thing.
*end spoiler*
To me a bleak ending is something like Requiem for a Dream...no one died, they just all suffered and had their lives ruined. Thats likely the way I ****fy sad endings...death and suffering for no apparent point or purpose.

I still cry, to this day, at the end of Terminator 2. Even when Arnold is like "I know now why you cry", kind of a corny line, but damn it gets me teary-eyed just thinking about it.

But it is something I cannot do.
That's because the ending of There Will Be Blood (and, really, the movie aw a whole) made me lol. :| Seriously though, I laughed so hard at that movie. So many good lines, but the best has to be "I'm Henry.... I'm Henry.... I'm Henry... your brother.... from another mother." How could you not laugh at that? And
death by bowling pin.
Absolutely hysterical. I thought the movie was too over the top to take seriously. :PI'm surprised no one has yet mentioned There Will Be Blood. The ending (and, really, the movie as a whole) was so bleak and fruitless that I wanted to kill myself by the time it was over. :P
