Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption...I'm taking "best" to mean "most meaningful/powerful."

Any of the death scenes in American History X.

The most powerful for me is Fredo Corleone's death in The Godfather Part II.

"Now, and at the hour of our death, Amen"

*Bang*

Gets me everytime.

The scene of King Leonidas on the battlefield, calling out in his final breath to his wife just before being assailed by hundreds of arrows.

The death of Angela Lansbury's character in the 1962 version of the Manchurian Candidate comes to mind. In Vanilla Sky when Cameron Diaz's character drove off a bridge. Braveheart when Wallace is quartered.

Pure Ownage

from S.P.L.

Well it's more of what happens to him than the actual death itself, but just WOW...Look at it!

Clint Eastwood's character in Gran Torino. Was such a shocking death, expecting him to go in and kick some ass, but seeing him just stand there and get gunned down.Dubiosity

Don't bother with the spoilers or anything, I literally don't want to see this movie now.

If I could i'd count the madness of Sam Lowry in the torture chair, in the movie Brazil. Even though he didn't technically die, seeing him going into such a state of insanity at the end of the movie is just so sad. Its practically as if he really did physically die.

Surely you expected some spoilers when entering a thread about movie death scenes.

Some that come to mind are Elias in Platoon, Teddy at the start of Memento, the end of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, and Mr Blonde in Reservoir Dogs.

Well from horror movies....

Urban Legends- A very good modern slasher (surprisingly) and had some very unique and great death scenes, though the ending was far fetched.... Still the "dog in the microwave" was just sick and cool.

Scream- The first death scene is a classic

Wolf Creek- When the main character is trying to escape....that is to gruesome.

(Original) Black Christmas- When "santa" wrapped that girl with plastic, and then when the movie ends how you finally see her face...

Aliens- Famous eating scene

Nightmare on Elm street- Famous dragging girl to the top scene.

The Decent-When the two friends fight... very sad

High Tention- Mostly all the deaths were really well done, to bad the ending wasn't

Silent Hill- When pryamid head kills the follower and when "the beast" kills the cult leader with wire, ouch gotta hurt.

Alec Guinness as Colonel Nicholson in "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (not his death in Star Wars)
