Iron Maiden got started in 1975, cut their demo in 1978, signed their record deal in 1979, and released their first album in early 1980. They are a 70s band, even if they hit their popularity height in the 80s. As for my favorite band that was started in the 1980s, Guns N Roses.honkyjoe

Im going off the Dickinson Era. Dianno was good but I dont think the band was really amazing until Bruce came along in 81 or whatever.

I believe that in releasing their first album in 1980 they are an 80's band.
Also, I go with Maiden due to the fact that they're the greatest band ever.
Well, if we're going by what year the band started in, then Blind Guardian automatically wins because they're my favorite band and they started in the 80's.
If we're going off of what band was my favorite who was in the peak of their popularity during the 80's, then it shifts to Iron Maiden.
Either Depeche Mode or Metallica I guess.
The 80's were pretty bloody awful for music. There are plenty of bands that existed in the 80's but didn't really come into their prime until the 90's though.
For me it would be...
When I was a kid I used to like Michial Jackson a lot  Honestly if you were a little kid in the 80's he was the ****!
If I was to pick one today and say they was 'the best'. I'll probably go with.... Gary Numan.
Oh wait those are all solo artists. In that case, hmm. I'll probably go for Iron Maiden because I like playing their tracks on guitar hero games.
Poison. They were TRUE metal, not like this Metallica, Slayer, and Iron Maiden crap. Best band of the 80s by far.Brmarlin
Please, please tell me you're joking.

Metallica, Slayer, Maiden, Megadeth, Primus, and Anthrax (and many more) brought metal back to it roots, away from the the glam/hair metal.
I forgot Sonic Youth. :PJesus and Mary Chain.
Mudhoney.
Pixies.
R.E.M.
Violent Femmes.
Sonic Youth.
The Replacements.
My Bloody Valentine (I think...).
The Meat Puppets.
Husker Du.
Ect.

Obviously.
On a serious note, I would put either Bad Religion or Dead Kennedys as the best band of the 80s.
But of course :

As I said, some bands were around in the 80's, but didn't really come into their prime until the 90's. Nobody knew who the hell Nine Inch Nails was in the 80's, and why should they have, when their first album didn't even come out until 1989? They weren't even around for over 80% of the 80's, and thus they hardly count as an 80's band.
When I said that, I specifically had Soundgarden in mind, who were formed in 1984.
the Pixiescooler890
Yeah, The Pixies were defiinitely great. Super influential. I think New Order and The Cure are up there too. And the Police, until Sting wrote that song about stalking people, that was on the charts for weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks...
Your list is full of win :oFor me it would be...

Pretty Hate Machine sold a hell of a lot of copies on the back of the sucess of Down In It and Head Like a Hole in the 80s and tours with Skinny Puppy.
That said, I see where you are coming from. However, I believe that the best album of teh 80s is Pretty Hate Machine and so I believe the best 80s band is Nine Inch Nails.
