I'm from Canada, and never heard the term beanie till I moved to San Diego (temporarily) for school. I go to a store to buy a touque. Asked one of the girls working where they kept their touques. She looked at me like I was a moron.

I actually had to describe what I was looking for. Eventually she figured it out, I explained I was Canadian she laughs but then was all confused. I asked her what she called it, she referred to it as a beanie. Evidently, i phoned my friends back home and they couldn't believe it. It sounds ridiculous, it's not like I'm from some hick town. I live in vancouver haha. I drive to Seattle all the time. But never have i encountered this.

Um, beanie? haha.

What do you call it?

How do you pronounce that? Almost as good as the Brits on here when they were saying "trainers" i smile every time :P I bought a beanie from Canda funny enough on ebay, the description said "knit hat" which i've seen them go by before.

I just call them hats, or winter hats. I have heard of the term beanie, but not touque.

touque is pronounced "2 k" with I guess.. a hard K? KUH sound, not KAY. I call them touques when they're meant to keep you warm, beanies when they're just fashionable.

Touque's as i am Canadian. Beanie sounds silly and reminds me of those hats with the little spinners ontop.

I believe it's "two-k (soft k)" but that's based only on one guy I knew from Toronto.

It's a touque. Beanies are those little circle hats with a propeller on them.

To me (I'm Canadian) there has been a distinct separation between a toque and a beanie and I'll illustrate this through imagery.

Beanie:

Toque:

The difference is in the fit. A beanie is tight and provides poor protection to the ears; it is also much thinner, perfect for certain American winters. A toque generally has a fold at the bottom to provide an added layer of warmth to the ears and it is much thicker in general.

I believe we can live in a world where both beanies and toques exist.

The funny thing is I live in Michigan and i've never even heard of Touque. They are just called beanies if they are used to be cool (they aren't cool, they are dumb and look stupid and are for punk losers who like to wear winter hats in the summer), and Winter Hats for when they are used in the cold weather. I'd think that i would have heard both being used because i am so close to Canada, but i guess not.

I'd never seen the word touque until I read this thread. In the Army, they're called watch caps, though if I were going to a store looking for one, I would say beanie.
