who is the one band that has influenced the most amount of bands, personally I think it's Motorhead, without Motorhead there would be no Metallica, no Slayer, no Megadeath, even no Nirvana, the list just goes on

the beatles no doubt.

if you wanna get technical with it as well add the ratpack too, since a lot of bands from that era influenced the birth of rock and roll.

The Beatles. Anyone who says otherwise is ignoring or has little knowledge of music history over the past few decades.

The Smiths and Joy Division? Seriously? A case could be made for Led Zeppelin, but those other two? Nah.

Do I doubt that they've influenced bands? No, of course not. One of my own favorite bands, Neurosis, claims to have been influenced by Joy Division. But influenced the most bands? Hardly.

Robert Johnson. Without him, the entire modern music industry wouldn't have ever existed. He was the person who subtly inspired the rock and roll movement, which in turn developed into all its sub-genres (pop, metal, punk, country, etc.). Without him and his meagre discography of him playing a guitar in front of a microphone, nothing would be the same today. And I bet 99 out of every 100 people have never heard of him.

He may have had the most impact early on, but I'm thinking more in terms of numbers. Robert Johnson may have influenced bands that influenced bands, but how many were directly influenced by Johnson himself?

Wrong answers...But The Smiths and Joy Division (along with REM) were the pioneers of alternative rock. But most influence? No way.

Muddy Waters and Delta Blues men are by far the most influential

Then comes The Beatles, and everything else is after that.

Robert Johnson was incredible influential. Lots of people consider "Hell Hound on my Trail" a precursor to rock music.

But he was (one of) the first. Without his influence, other acts like the Rat Pack and Elvis and Johnny Cash may never have been inspired to get into music. Eric Clapton of all people based most of his early career of the influence of Johnson. Clapton's most famous song (Crossroads) is a cover of Johnson. I definitely don't deny the impact of groups like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath... but without Johnson, rock and roll may never have developed. For such a prevalent force in music, it had incredibly humble beginnings in Johnson.

Nope. Most people know who Robert Johnson is, you can see his entire discography on sale whenever you walk in to a store selling music. The Rolling Stones covered his songs as did many other artists. He is mentioned consistently in the likes of Rolling Stone magazine, and artists constantly claim him to be an influence even now. It sounds like you're late to the party, and you think everyone else is lagging behind you when in reality they were already there.

How is "Helter Skelter" the first heavy metal song when Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" came out before it?

Sabbath was 7 years before Motorhead. You make a decent point, but I'd say without Sabbath bringing metal to the masses, Motorhead would still be playing the bar circuit.

Motorhead was just one many British heavy metal bands that were influenced by Black Sabbath. Sabbath released seven albums before Motorhead released their first.
