Here's an interesting story I found:

Over Labor day weekend the author of the linked article received a facebook message through Tucson Right to Life from a nurse with the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline, about a woman who had taken an abortion pill but then changed her mind and was seeking a way to counteract the pill and thus called the hotline. The hotline was having difficulty contacting a doctor because of the labor day holiday, long story short the author was able to contact some people she knew and get the woman a prescription for progesterone, and an ultrasound at the Fatima Women's Center, which found that the baby was still alive and well.

Social Media does get criticized quite a bit, but it just goes to show it can be very handy in an emergency situation.

Um, okay then. Unless this is some not so subtle way to start a discussion about abortion, what is the point of this thread exactly?

Sounds like she really shouldn't be having a baby, but ok.

This thread is going to devolve into an abortion debate isn't it?

Didn't you post something like this before that was based on completely unsubstantiated claims from pro-life activists?

Is this a common thing? People taking abortion pills and regretting it? Was it a 5 minute decision?

Reminds me of the time I took an abortion pill thinking I was pregnant. But it was just all the french fries I'd been eating.

Not sure if it's common, but it's not the first time I have heard of that happening. People change their minds about a lot of things. From what i've heard, a significant number of women have had abortions not because they wanted to but because they were pressured to do (usually by a boyfriend or parent). Maybe that is what might explain that, or maybe she was just very conflicted.

I wasn't intending to start a debate etc. I guess my purpose was to spread information about the hotline.

@whipassmt: Makes sense. It must be horrible to be coerced into a decision you are unsure of in a situation such as this. I can only imagine how monumental a decision like this is.

@whipassmt: You just randomly stumbled across an anti-abortion college group? Jeez, where do you hang out for fun?

Anyhow, she needs to go to a real doctor to see if any real damage was done to the baby. I doubt she's gonna get proper opinions on the baby's health from doctors associated with the pro-life movement. What's to say the chemical abortion pill she took for a 9 week old developed fetus didn't do any serious damage. I mean, some pro-lifes expect women to give birth to children with no brain, and if that's what this baby has to look forward to I'm sure they'd say the baby is fine.

The longer I think about this, I'm beginning to have doubts as to whether this story is even true.

I mean, let's think about this, women takes an abortion pill for her 9-week old, instantly regrets it and goes to the Google rather than (I dunno) call 9-1-1, find an author of a anti-abortion article, finds his Facebook, sends him a message... this whole thing stinks of being made up.

@korvus: Interestingly enough, the same day that I posted this topic, the episode of "Defending Life" that airs on EWTN on Thursday at 11 pm, was about the abortion pill reversal process and featured a taped-discussion with Dr. George Delgado who pioneered the method of reversing the abortion pill. According to Dr. Delgado there have been 25 babies saved who are already born and 47 who are still in the womb and the success rate of the method is 53% though the earlier the process is done the greater the chance of success, with 72 hours being the limit for the reversal to work.

The reason that an abortion pill can be reversed is based on how it works: the pill is a synthetic hormone that blocks the production of the natural hormone progesterone which is needed to sustain the pregnancy. Essentially the pill works by starving the fetus to death, which is why it could take days before fetus dies. The reversal procedure involves giving the patient progesterone to allow the pregnancy to continue.

In regards to Lamprey's point, Dr. Delgado says there are no birth-defects involved in this process.
