Hey OT. The topic says it all. Looking to bu a motorcycle when I get back from deployment. I have my eyes on a Kawasaki Ninja ZX6r. I have heard that new riders shouldn't start on 600s, but I have also heard that since I am a big guy, 600 is fine. Any motorcycle riders out there that can shed some light on this for me?

Sempers.

That is a terrible starter bike. The 500cc Ninja would be a way way safer option. There are some 600 or 650cc cruisers that are ok options for starter bikes but the ninja is way too powerful. Also take the rider safety course if you haven't already.

Ok mom. The bike would be fine for your size btw, adjust the seat though

He's right. That bike is way too powerful for a beginner. Any experienced rider with any sense will tell you the same. The Ninja 500 or the Suzuki GS500 are great beginner bikes.

If you have never ridden one there really are NO words to explain just how much you ARENT ready for a 600cc sportbike. Even with several years of MX experience (not really applicable but whatever) going straight to an R6 scared the hell out of me. At no point was i prepared for it.

I had to ride for at least a year before i was not completely petrified to be on it. Anyone who says otherwise is blowing hot air.

My advice?

Get something used that you wont mind laying over and then trade it in after a year of proving you arent going to die on something better.

Your physical size will really only be a factor if you are morbidly overweight as most bikes and the suspensions they use are made with the assumption that half the people on them will be marginally close to your height. It might feel cramped while laying down on one but the chassis size usually isnt going to be different across multiple CC ranges anyway. Just a smaller engine on the same frame usually.
