In my profession I meet a lot of women who have hyphenated last names. Many of which have them because they started their profession before they were married. There are a lot of cases where women choose to have a hyphenated last name because they don't want to get rid of it, they feel that they are still a part of their family.

To me those women are disrespectful, as if the husband is second rate to her family. Why not just have the guy as a domestic partner and leave marriage out of it?

Anyway, what say you OT to the topic at hand?

There is no obligation to take your husband's last name. Who cares?

No.... The change of last name from the girl's father's last name (maiden name) to her husband's has long been a topic of controversy because the last name is marking who she 'belongs' to. The father 'gives away' the daughter at the wedding to her husband, etc. It is nobody's business but the woman's which name or names she would like to use, if you have a problem with that then don't marry a woman who doesn't want to change her name to yours. Simple enough.

No, because if the man feels it is disrespectful he should bring this up with his future wife beforehand.

I couldn't care less if my future wife decided to keep her last name. On the contrary I want her to.

No. There are plenty of reasons for a woman to keep her own name or do a hyphenated name. While there should probably be some discussion, there should not be anything forced. The man should also be open to changing his name.

I'd rather they just keep their own last name then hyphenate.  I just think hyphenated names look stupid.  But that's merely a personal preference.  In fact, I think many of you men of OT should take your wives names.

"To me those men are disrespectful, as if the wife is second rate to her family. "

There, flipped it around for you, so maybe you can see it from another perspective. I don't see why you think women have to be "more respectful" then men, why can't there just be equality?

I know a few girls that say they're the last of their name so they won't change it. Although I have one friend with a hyphenated name who is dating a guy with a hyphenated name...what's she going to do? "person name-name-name-name"?

Then maybe you should lead by example. When you get married, you can take your wife's last name.

How is it disrespectful to the husband? It shows that he is willing to go a little further then just forcing the woman to take the last name of the man, which is disrespectful to the woman if you just assume she should do it imo.

It makes life easier for the woman to change their name.

Example.

If my son was to get into a car accident and he holds my name, but my wife doesn't - they won't allow her into the emergency room to see him without extensive proof.

If I was a woman I would probably change my name as long as it wasn't something absurd like; Gaylord, Hashtag, etc...

In my culture, the men take the women's last name, they run the finances, they win the debates, and they buy lots and lots of shoes.

I cannot fathom this thread.

Having watched the number of hoops my wife jumped through in order to change her name, I would not have had any issues with her if she had decided to keep her maiden name. At the time, she was not as established in her education/career as she is now, and if we were just now getting married, I would encourage her not to change her name. She has also stated that if anything were to happen to me, and she got remarried someday, she would retain her current last name.

Why do you need to be a woman to take your spouse's last name though? Why won't you, as a man, take your wife's last name? You just explained the benefits of sharing a last name.

marrage in its current form is an outdated concept. what i purpose is a 1 year rolling contract marriage where each year you can choose to renew or abandon your marriage. no divorce headache to deal with and no splitting up off assets.

I think it's stupid. It goes against tradition and now you have a hyphen in your name. Better to just keep the same name completely if you're so bothered.

i was just going off the defination. marriage offers no advantages to me i dont think

'Marriage (also called matrimony or wedlock) is a social union or legal contract between people called spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the spouses, between the spouses and their children, and between the spouses and their in-laws.'

I always wonder what will happen in the next generation of marriages. Will a marriage between George Karas-Stephanopolis and Maria Werthen-Cohen end up with a last name of "Karas-Stephanopolis-Werthen-Cohen"?

Is this a new trend to embed the entire family tree into bewildering mega-last-names?
