I haven't seen the show in a long time, so I'm really confused as to why they changed the name. It's just such an awful name.

they've actually changed it twice. the last episode of the 7th season was about the aqua teens trying to stop the number 100 from taking their show into syndication after 100 episodes, so they changed their name to Aqua Unit Patrol Squad 1. The next season was under that name, and then they changed it to Aqua Something You Know Whatever. The creators say they started changing the name because they got bored with the old name. Aside from the name, and the intro/opening song, nothing about the show (characters, style, typical content) has changed at all.
As for following it... there's really nothing to follow. It's not like there's much of a plot, even within individual episodes. That's why it's so constantly hit and miss. In my opinion, more often than not, it's just really weird, and becomes at least somewhat more funny if I'm extremely baked. Every now and again they have a brief moment, a conversation with a one time character or something, that is just hilarious. That's never been super common though.
