Anyone else hate how people use the term "African-American" to describe all black people, even those who aren't even from Africa? Every black person I talk to hates the term. African-American is a nationality, not a race.

But that's the same logic for calling someone Chinese American. They may not have been born in China, but they are still Chinese. So African Americans are African by blood.Anyone else hate how people use the term "African-American" to describe all black people, even those who aren't even from Africa? I wasn't born in Asia yet on papers it says Asian-American. It's just there to tell you where your origins came from.
What about a white person from South Africa who moves to America and becomes an American citizen?hiphops_savior
They're called Americans. :P

Everyone's ancestry is in Africa if you go back far enough.A good solution I have. Instead of saying African American or Asian American, or even black, white, asian, hispanic. We should all go by ice cream flavors.
Chocolate, Vanilla, Mango, Pineapple, Kiwi, Blueberry, rainbow, cherry, banana split, cheesecake brownies :) Now Im hungry!
I much prefer to live back when people could just talk..say whats on their minds without all the controversy..man I miss the 70s and 80s.
I tend to use the term 'black'. Doesn't seem any worse to me than using 'white' for any caucasian. British_Azimio
I fully agree.
As a black person, I understand the need for it. It just feels a little (and I do mean little) awkward to hear someone say "black guy" to me. Shadow-Elite
Maybe you're just overly sensitive. I wait tables and they will literally not call me by name after i have introduced myself by NAME. It's still "Hey white boy! I need some more strawberry lemonade!" Does it bother me? No. I go get them some strawberry lemonade.
I'M CAUCASION BIA BIA!!!!
Not Every Black person in America is "AMERICAN"
and Not every African is "BLACK"
so the Term "AFRICAN AMERICAN" to describe ALL black people is incorrect in all sense of the word.
BLACK is NOT OFFENSIVE.
I am PROUD to be BLACK, so please use the term more often :D
But if you call them black, they ll get mad at you and beat you up :(Solid_TangoEvery black person I have asked has told me that hey hate being called African-American because they are not from Africa.
ME ME ME ME
IF your not from Africa You have no right to put African in your race title.
only time you is a African is when you are from/citizen there. Just like you can't be a American unless you are from or have citizenship in American.
Could someone tell me what african american/negro/black people wanna be called? Everything is racism these days.LustForSoul
Inseatd of asking someone from the boards, ask an individual who your confusion applies to. It makes far more sense.
IN relaiton to the topic, being from Britain, I can never understand why the US seeks to differentiate between people there. 'Americans' seems to be a better term and more specifically, a white or black american. Native american or Asian amercian... all Americans. 'African American is as dumb as European American', it sounds like a relic of a past age.
Could someone tell me what african american/negro/black people wanna be called? Everything is racism these days.LustForSoulWell anytime I hear a "black" person say anything about a "caucasian" its...white guy...SO I would say black is acceptable and its what I say 9/10
As a black person, I understand the need for it. It just feels a little (and I do mean little) awkward to hear someone say "black guy" to me. Shadow-EliteThen don't call me a cracker.
The term "African American" makes no sense to me as I don't run around calling white people Anglo-Germanic-French-Welsh Australians, nor do I expect to be called Guang Dong-Hong Kong-Southeast Asia-Chinese Australian.
No, me being Black/African American I really don't care what I'm called, out of the two. While a Nigerian can say that he/she is a Nigerian American, I can't so I see it as me taking the title of the continent. I'll also take the title of Black because that's what the majority of society has labled us as. We were the Negro at one point and no one had issue, why should I have issues with being Black?
So to answer your question again, No I do not dislike the term African American.
As a black person, I understand the need for it. It just feels a little (and I do mean little) awkward to hear someone say "black guy" to me. Shadow-Elite
There's no need African-American. Maybe back in the Jim Crow days when the only alternative was negro and Black people embraced African roots more but now the term is so politically incorrect is makes no sense.
Most media outlets these days use the term "BLACK"
The only time I hear "African American" on TV or any media, is usually from an individual who's trying real hard not to sound racist but ironically accomplishes the opposite.
