Make up for =Do something over again, usually if you missed it the first time. Example : Ill make up for my test thatI missed.

Make out = to look at something and understand it. Example: I cant Make out the small print on this page.

Make something up = To imagine something, or to Lie. Example: Pink elephants can fly- I just made something up. :P

well, if I get what you're saying... To make something out/make out is to kind of get an understanding of something. and to make up for is to compensate for something.
