Well the title relates to all three of the things mentioned.

I'm writing a paper attempting to argue against the claim that some people play better when they are drunk.

And since there are plenty of gamers here (hopefully above the legal drinking age in the US) I would like to

ask my fellow gamers if you think you play better when you are "drunk", and why this would be? If you have reasons for

believing this, please post.

I generally play worse when drunk. I notice that if I play drunk, I'm much more reckless. However my friend has always been convinced that he plays better drunk. I don't really notice, since he's one of those freaks that will beat anybody at any game even if they've never played it. -_-

I don't know I've never been drunk. But I'm pretty sure that if I do get drunk I may end up killing someone. :(

I don't know, I rarely play games and rarely drink. I don't think it'd make me better but it'd definitely be more entertaining which is really what games are all about.

Not really any worse but not better. I've never played a game when completely smashed though. When it comes to booze though there's basically normal me and piss drunk me. There isn't really much in between and to get to piss drunk I generally have to drink a pretty decent amount.

You're asking people?

This is just for their perception, you're going to follow this up with experimental work, right?

Well, I haven't done the scientific work nor do I know how hard it would be getting approval from the IRB, but another one of my college friends somehow actually got the work approved by them and has data available for me to cite in my paper, so that is one of the sources I will be using.

And though it's not really a part of my scope, I have found other research on the effects of alcohol on specific brain functions that could tie into my topic.

This here however, my professor advised me to do, just so I could use this as my "internet source". So yeah, it's just for perception.

Slowed reactions mean I'm a lot, lot worse. Geometry Wars, Viva Pinata and Rock Band are all infinitely more fun when the alcohol is flowing, though.

Hell no. My reaction time becomes non-existent and I tend to start swearing at my opponents at the slightest hint of me doing bad.

The only games I've played drunk were World of Warcraft and Soul Calibur 4. In WoW, for some reason I decided to get my character smashed as well and go fly around. One of my worst ideas ever. In Soul Calibur 4, I just got pretty bad. My friend was amazingly good when buzzed though. He was pulling off moves we've never seen and just doing straight onslaught. When he got more drunk, he was the worst out of us.

It has been statistically proven that I can play the drums on Rock Band better while drunk. Also, while I wouldn't say I'm better at CoD or similar games when drunk, I do enjoy it more.

You just have to react earlier than you normally would to compensate.

Drunk = depressiant = slows you down = worse at everything.

It makes some games more enjoyable and easier to tolerate, but actually being more skilled at the game? No, the opposite.

Here in the UK there is no real legal drinking age, you just have to be over 18 to buy it but back on topic.

I think there's a curve when it comes to drinking and gaming, you generally chill out an gradually get better to a point. Then there's a steep drop off point where your concentration will go and your gaming skills with it.

Nah, I usually lose interest pretty quickly depending on the level of inebriation. Also I have fallen asleep playing a video game and drinking. Never do it anymore because of those reasons.

depends on the game, if I'm supposed to be shooting people in the face or managing multiple things at once I'm going to do poorly because I don't have all of my functions at full speed.

If its rock band or something I'll probably do better because I'll play fast and loose and stop thinking about my finger placement and just doing it.

i feel like i play COD better when i am drunk. back when i used to be a person that would indulge in other substances that impairs the mind (don't wanna say the actual word to avoid moderation), i would play a lot of halo with my friend after indulging in the certain substance, and it was not uncommon for me to get 30 kills per game.

as for whether i actually AM better when under the influence, i don't really know. i don't think i'm better nor worse. i'm generally pretty good at FPS's i've played as it is.

I usually go up and down - there's a magic period of time when I'm slightly drunk that I will be absolutely amazing. Once I'm past that point it's all downhill - I may have more fun that way but I'm surely not helping my kill-death ratios or anything. :P

Definitely makes the game more fun and interesting. But most of the time I play far worse then what I do when sober. A few drinks might help in relaxing and loosening up to enjoy the game, but being hammered is a different story.

I can't speak for myself, but when I've played against people who would drink, they seem to play a pinch better. After a few more drinks though, they start to make stupid decisions, meaning they play much worse....

I think if you're a very inhibited person you could actually benefit from a little alcohol for the same reasons that small amounts of alcohol increase sociability...
