My friend said he read an article about Nintendo will be releasing the next Wii in 2009 with hi-def graphics and also, Microsoft will be releasing the new Xbox in 2010. I was like WTF. Anyone heard about this? It's a joke, right?

There will be no new console from Nintendo in 09. Wii is making far too much money for Nintendo to up and abandon it's audiance before it even had a chance to get to the 1-150 dollar range.
Xbox is more plausible since there are reports of teams already working on games for this non-existant console, but again it's really hard to believe. 360 is starting to make some good profit, and has enough strength to create awe-inspiring games for far past 2010. It'll last till atleast 2011, but my money is on 2012 for the next round of consoles.
ye wat zapoo sed lyk a ds lite hehe i sed my own example haha i rule!! or your friend was lying or being an ass dats wat i think anyway lolwaz-zaI can't uh....don't uh....what? Anyways TC, chances are wii won't have a successor until 2011 common sense would tell you, and your friend needs to use his if he has any.
While I honestly believe that because the Wii lacks hardware tech as good as the current gen consoles the system won't last as long as the others (I say that around 2011, we will hear release news of Nintendo's next console), I seriously doubt that a sequel to the Wii will happen next year. What COULD happen in a couple of years is that Nintendo does something like they did with the N64 and release an Expansion Pak for the system to slightly improve the graphics. Maybe through some piece of hardware or a firmware update. Maybe through the use of one of those 2 USB ports on the back, i don't know...
I say the Wii lasts about 4 years; the average life of a major Nintendo console is 5, but like I said, there will be too big of a technology gap and they will kill the console a little early. Hopefully not how Microsoft killed the Xbox (completely), but like what Sony is doing to the PS2 (limiting software slowly while building up it's next console entry). Don't get me wrong: I love the Wii. It's the only current gen console I have right now, but I just don't see it having a long lifespan. I don't mind if it ends quickly though; I'd definitely buy another console like the Wii if it had "next gen" graphics, a hard drive, and a stronger online field.
Actually I doubt your friend was lying. When the Wii was still rather new a lot of gaming sites and magazines speculated that Nintendo might go in one of 2 directions. The first was a new Wii would be introduced in 2 to 3 years along the lines of a new model like a Gameboy SP or a DS Lite. Nothing that would fundamentally change gameplay, but would enhance the experience (like a larger harddrive). The other was just a whole new Wii that would be BC but still stronger than the original, BUT have it sell for around $200 or $250 to make it no more expensive than the previous Wii and more in line with the specs of the 360 and PS3.
However I doubt either scenario will happen now that the Wii has proven to be more than a fad and is showing no signs of slowing down..
the last gen systems were around for a good 7-8 years

if games are still being made for it it's still kicking
That doesn't change the fact that it was technically succeeded by the PS3. (though the latter's disappointing market performance has, if anything, been what's kept the PS2 alive this long)

I can literally confirm for you that there are no such plans in place at this time.
Speculizing? Speculating. Stay in school, kids.GSU28Yeah, you're so smart. Sounds like an upgrade to me like how the 360 gets a new tuneup now and then.. probably some new hardware to add to the Wii.
I would expect the next round of console wars to be kicked off by Microsoft, as technically, they got in first this generation with the 360. None of the major companies will think of their next gen until one of them decides to go ahead with it. You can either wait and see what the competition does or get in first. However, because of the amount Sony sunk into the PS3 they won't go first, and because of the good sales on Wii, Nintendo won't go first either.
Wii will be upgraded as the big N are tending to do with their handhelds since the Gameboy. Expect either a hard drive version, or more likely, a smaller version that comes in many colours. However once MS release their next console, probably around 2010-2011, expect big changes in the Nintendo and Sony camp towards their next gens.

An analyst claimed we could see the Xbox 720 as early as 2009 which means the 360's life span was only 4 years, barely. And that's not good considering Microsoft is notorious for pulling all support on an old console.
The Wii was never designed to be more than 5 years.
The average console lifespan is 5 years.
Expect the 720 to be out by 2010, with the Wii 2 right around the corner. Disgusting isn't it?
If it is true...which is not likely, this gen of gaming is ridiculous. For all companies i mean. They pump out little quality games and when we buy their consoles, they come out with a new one. As a consumer, yes i would be ticked off. I better not see anything until 2012. =__=
