I recently picked up playing Mario Kart Wii online after a long hiatus, and try as I might I kept getting matched up with at least 1 or 2 cheaters.

Is this what its like with Mario Kart Wii online now? I was wanting to play it a bit to get excited for Mario Kart 7 in December but nearly all the races I've played the last few days included someone who immediately started the racer with the Star or a Mega Shroom.

Did I just run into some bad luck? I'd say 7 out of 10 matches I played had at least 1 person doing this and always winning.

Anyone else run into this problem?

This is why i don't play online anymore, it's pointless. Its a shame cheaters ruin a really great game.

This is kinda disappointing, We were getting a WiiU, and have a backlog and this game was going to be one. (we will still get it to play locally though)

I guess the new one that inevitably will be on the WiiU will be the one to look forward to online for a bit without the over-saturation of cheaters, (atleast for a little while)

Mario Kart Wii cheaters kill me.. Well, not as bad as the Metriod Prime: Hunters cheaters on the DS; but still pretty close.

That's what online gaming in general has to become, you have to put up, with much more than you get out of online game and that's why its a shame that there is so much focus on it these days.

Given how old the game is by now, it's not unexpected for stuff like that to happen

Its not just what mario kart has become, cheating happens in a lot of online multiplayer games. For instance, take Call of Duty Black Ops. People boost, lag switch and use aimbots to cheat in matches. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit has boost cheating in the race mode. Its going to happen regardless

It's kinda hard to find any online game without some type of cheater, even PS3 and Xbox360 online games have cheaters, you just need to learn how to deal with it.

I might be lucky since the cheaters I've run into on Mario Kart don't do it to win, they're usually just doing it for fun. I joined a race with a full room of players, when the race started one guy used thunder on all the players and then started to lay down bombs ahead on the track, he only seemed to go after racers in 3rd place or higher and whenever he got to 1st place he'd stop and wait for others to pass...and then start slamming them with items.

On the last lap he used a bunch of speed boosts and it looked like he was going to take 1st and win...but nope, while waiting at the finish line he'd spam green shells and bananas setting it up so you''d need to dodge those to take 1st place. His rank was 9999 and he let all players pass him when he could have gotten 1st himself. Anyone around 1st got a huge boost in ranking, while he lost a ton. (but he still had the same rank in the next match.:P)

For me that made playing even more fun, seeing all those green shells and bombs going off while trying to avoid tons of bananas on the track was like playing a new crazy mode. I wouldn't mind it as a real mode, where one person gets the "best" items and tries to stop the other racers from finishing (Karts would have life bars in this mode).

I don't get the point of cheating in an online game. Is it actually entertaining for people to win when they're doing that? lol

Ah, no different than what you get when you pop in Mario Kart DS. Last I played MKDS, people changed their Kart from 100cc to the 150cc karts. And they randomly did it this near the end when me or someone else look like they are about to win....

Yeah, I've noticed quite a bit of cheating too. Stars and Bullet Bills are the main thing that gets abused when I used to play if I recall correctly.

hacking definitely is a problem with online gaming. Unfortunately there's no way to kick/ban cheaters in Mario Kart. Hopefully Nintendo actually takes online play seriously in the future. I'm not holding my breath, though.

If I were a cheater that would be the only way I could see hacking actually being fun.

Once Mario Kart 7 comes around the corner, I expect Mario Kart Wii to become a hacker's playground and not a place for normal players to come to, like Mario Kart DS probably is now. At least with Mario Kart 7 there will be eight racers instead of twelve.

I only raced with hackers a couple of times in this game so I must be lucky compared to most of the people on this board.

one thing ninty are definately going to have to learn with online gaming on the 3DS and wiiu is that their involvement in development for online games doesnt end when the game goes gold. any online game needs patches to plug exploits rejig balancing and optimise performance. its impossible to get that spot on with just internal testing before launch. they dont need to go to the extremes of blizzard (though doing so can create a good community around a game) but they need to keep working on games like mario kart post launch. since ninty only tend to release one MK game per platform it could be a giid idea after launch to have a small dedicated MK team that continue to balance and fix it and create new DLC for it also. same with smash bros wiiu whenever thats released. animal crossing also if online will be a big deal in the 3DS and wiiu versions. other things of course include banning cheaters from games and providing a report button. ninty also need to keep logs of any chat and input from the controller so that they can investigate reported abuses. again small dedicated post release teams for the likes of smash bros and kart could help with alot of this stuff.

I had no idea people cheated on mario kart wii. I haven't played it in some time so I suppose like others have said it was just something that was bound to happen, although I find it strange regardless of that.

The cheating JollyGreenOne spoke about though sounds like fun. I wouldn't mind being part of a game like that!

I've only encountered cheaters once or twice while playing online, but I do agree that Nintendo Wi-Fi needs a way to report cheaters to Nintendo. Nobody wants to play a race or battle with guys that use 15 Starmen, one after the other.

If there was a report button, people would misuse it. Cheaters will always exist unfortunately
