The Smach Zero, a portable Steam machine, now has an official release date and price. What is a Smach Zero you ask? It looks like a cross between a Vita and a Steam controller, with an embedded screen flanked by two of the distinctive Steam controller circle pads, and four buttons on each side. The gamepad is configurable, as well, to suit different games.

Here are the SMACH Zero’s specs:

  • AMD embedded G-Series SoC “Steppe Eagle” with Jaguar-based CPU and GCN-based Radeon graphics
  • 4 GB RAM Memory
  • 32GB Internal Memory and SD Card Slot
  • USB OTG
  • 5-inch Touch screen with 720p resolution
  • Configurable tactile gamepads
  • HDMI video output connection
  • Wi-Fi conectivity
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 4G mobile network connectivity (PRO model only)

As a Steam machine, it runs Valve's SteamOS, an operating system designed specifically to run Steam. So, what do you think, GameSpotters? Are you impressed with this new handheld from Steam?

This is a repeat of the Steam "console" a curiosity and interesting but nothing but a gimmick only a few will get

Because there is already excellent options on the market and the market is heavily dominated by Nintendo.

I'm intrigued. It'll be interesting to see what kind of support it gets and how it fares on the market.

I think it looks interesting and I'm curious to hear more about it. The only handheld I've owned was the original Gameboy, but I might consider buying this if the price is right.

its not a bad idea.

im under no illusions about it of course in terms of ability. will it play the most technically demanding games? no. not even close.

but steam has a *BEEP*ton of games that would be great for a handheld. so it has my attention.

The Steam Machine initiative is dead on arrival due to a combination of Linux-based systems and Valve's negligence to pay off the necessary bribes to get the launch titles it needs. I still think that Valve needs to spend money on Bandai Namco so that they'll localize Gundam Extreme VS and Tales of Vesperia, Relic Entertainment so that they can buy themselves from Sega to make Dawn of War III, Harmonix for a moddable Rock Band 4, i could write a whole list of people they need to pay.

I still think it's important to say this: If Valve isn't willing to spend money on Linux gaming, why should we?

None of the above. You can dislike the new handheld without disliking ALL handhelds. Bad poll.

I'd have to hold one to make an opinion. If it's loud and uncomfortable I don't care how powerful it is. Though the thought of playing my Steam games is intriguing.

I don't see it taking over the N3DSXL. Nintendo basically owns the non-mobile handheld market.

This handheld will be dead on arrival, based on the market I predict a flop.

@yukushi: It'd probably be much more successful if it ran on Windows 10
