Poll Your Favorite Resident Evil Game? (34 votes)

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard 12%
Resident Evil 6 3%
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 0%
Resident Evil: Revelations 3%
Resident Evil 5 3%
Resident Evil (original) 21%
Other 59%

So, I don't mean to shock anyone, but...I have never played a Resident Evil game

*waits for gasps, screams, and other noises of horror and surprise to stop*

Yes, I know. Terrible. And I call myself a game enthusiast.

Anyway, what are your favorite RE games, and why? I am looking to get into more horror games in 2019 because then tend to offer a really good, concise, single-player experience.

I've heard that RE7 (the most recent one) is arguably the best of the series, or at least the best recent one. It's also on sale for like 15 dollars, and iirc doesn't it have a VR option (I own an Oculus headset)?

But also the RE that takes place in Africa (5?) is also good.

I think I might already own Revelations (got it in a combo), is that also a good place to start.

Cheers, thanks for the input!

Did they age well?

I only ask because, even if a game is amazing, if it's old and I didn't play it, I find myself not able to immerse myself into it. It's weird because I can play old games I was "there for" like Half-Life or Deus Ex or Command and Conquer, but then if someone goes and tells me to play a 20+ year old game that's amazing it is hard for me to do.

That's actually why I stopped listing at RE5 and the original in the poll, not out of any disrespect for the series, but because I just thought I wouldn't be able to play them.

But if they've aged well I would give them a shot :D

2, by a mile really. It just has the X factor.

Which is a good way of implying it's good without the need to explain specifically.

Probably best to find an emulator.

@mrbojangles25: Here's what I'll say. If you never played a single Resident Evil game, then I strongly suggest you pick up Resident Evil 2 remake releasing this late January, that's the latest RE game and it's up-to-date, so give that a try. So yeah, get Resident Evil 2 remake, it was Resident Evil 1, an already great game, but on steroids, so everything was greater. Released in early 1998, RE2 started off the year with a bang, and even amongst the many good games that would follow in that same year, it was outstanding.

RE1 was already well received and started the whole fresh concept of survival horror, and RE2 only made it bigger and better. I was a middle schooler when the game came out on PS1 and I remember it being the game that everyone was playing and talking about at the time. I was around 13 when RE2 came out and it was just amazing at the time. Had loved the first game but the sequel bettered it in every way. All that said, get RE2 remake this month, it's a great start to get into the series.

About RE7, RE7 is what the first RE game should have been in first-person-shooter but PS1 was so limited, it's why it went 3rd-person-shooter but RE7 is okay, but it's noting like the previous series with Zombies outbreak and stuff like that. I advice just get RE2 remake and then, try RE7.

The best one is the Remake of 1 on the GC.

Heres my self-certain, up-my-ass rankings:

Zero: Sucks

1 : Good

1 Remake : Excellent

2 : Good

CV: Meh

3: Meh

4: Good

5: Meh

6: Sucks

7: Good

For me the best Resident Evil game is a toss up between Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4.

yep. Never got better. The camp factor was perfect (my chest iissh buurnning!) and the zombies were still zombies. Although, you have to give Japan credit for holding off on tentacles as long as they did.

Remake_Resi4_Nemesis are all tied as my favorites. Love them for different reasons. One is the pinnacle of the classic style, Resi4 is just a well paced and delivered game, which only weakens in the final act, and Nemesis fits a slimmer campaign with no bad pacing.

Can't go wrong with Veronica and Resi2 either though. They are great games as well.

Don't think Resident Evil 7 is work mentioning. Borrows aspects from the original and Nemesis (mansion, item combinations, lurking boss enemies). Except it's overly cinematic and on rails throughout, stealth is poorly handled in a Outlast way. Also level design clashes with the change of perspective for a worse gameplay experience.

Every other entry in the series is very missable, as they drastically range in quality. Outbreak was my introduction in the series overall but without servers up to play with others it's a bad game. No two ways about it. Zero and Resi6 are easily the worst main entries. Followed by the scan everything Revelations.

I still find the original Residen Evil 1 on PS1 to be the best. Sequels were good, but they simply did not have the perfect puzzles and awesome set pieces and pacing that resi1 had.

The resi1 remaster on PS4 was crap, tho. They totally destroyed the original cheerful graphics and... yeah, crap.

I agree, only good aspect was the train due to atmosphere, everything else was poorly handled, especially the gameplay mechanics. Like the item dropping and character switch system.

For you, Mr. Jangles, I would recommend Resident Evil 7, 4, or the REmake (Resi 1 remake.)

I personally am not a fan of horror, but these were all fun enough to hold my attention, at least. Resident Evil 5 was terrible, in my opinion, and 6 was even worse. After Resi 4, Capcom seemed to really struggle with making the game mechanics balanced.

Way to go not listing the most popular one.

You have Rev, Rev 2, 5 and 6. But not 4. Weirdness.

Resident Evil 3 : Nemesis

Granted Resident Evil 2 & Resident Evil remake are pretty high up there.

I suppose I favored the city setting more then what tended to be 2-3 places in the other games, it meant you visited more different locations although briefly in comparison but it also added to the feeling of isolation as you were pretty much almost the only person alive in Raccoon City. Additionally having an enemy that stalked you and appeared both at scripted cut scene moments but also when you just progressed to a new area added to the tension.

There's nothing like RE2. I must say the original RE was really good, too. But, in my opinion, when RE4 came on, that was like playing an ordinary zombie survival TPS. What I like about RE2 is the whole atmosphere and I believe it is a really good video game because of the moment it was created.

I played RE4, 5, 6, Revelations, the remake of 1, a little of 7 and a lot of 0.

4 was my first and is still my favorite. RE was never scary. There wasn't any point in the RE1 remake that frightened me. So I don't mind the action in 4. I still enjoyed RE1, though. The sequels to 4 were all mediocre or bad.

Wish I could enjoy the Revelation games more but I find them over scripted and filled with gimmicks that don't work very well like the scanning from Rev and useless side characters in Rev2. Maybe after Remake 2 I'll give them both another chance, seems many rate them higher than I thought. They are a return to the series horror roots but I also felt they did a lot of things poorly.
