My personal pick is a bit retro, but Jumping Flash 1 and 2 for the PS1 is what I would choose. What about you?
Not necessarily in terms of their gameplay, but pretty much any mainline Mario game comes to mind. Again, not necessarily because of it's gameplay but Psychonauts as well is a good pick. The game had aspects about it that were very different and unique. I thought at least.
@npiet1: Does it get you into the action quicker than Quantum Break did? That game was really fun too, but in order to properly show it to newcomers, you had to choose a mission halfway into the story. Starting from the beginning often bored my friends with how many scripted sequences there were before it got to anything resembling freeform gameplay.
White Knight Chronicals. Only unique good game I know. Was a pretty good single player rpg but then the multiplayer was addictive and damn near infinite.
@speeny: For how mainstream Mario is, it's rather odd how much of an outlier the franchise is. There are very few big budget platformers dropping these days.
Ignoring the ones that have already been said, I'd go Jet Set Radio, Gravity Rush, Noby Noby Boy, and Flower
Base Jumpers 1995.
You climb a tower coop with a friend and then, well base jump down avoiding obstacles and trying to push your friend into them or make him miss opening his parachute.
Combination of coop and vs in a this game made for some great memories even to this day.
Total War franchise.
I am sure they exist, but no other game seems to blend the real-time tactics with the turn-based grand strategy game.
Feels a bit dishonest calling it "unique" since it's essentially a hybrid of two sub-genres of the strategy genre, but as I said...unaware of anything like it. Maybe this King Arthur game I recall?
Folklore for the story as well as cool use of motion controls. Puppeteer for its style and unique take on platforming as well as theme. Gravity Rush for its main character and air mechanic. Warioware for the microgame concepts that were silly as can be. Rayman origins and legends. They might be platformers, but nothing comes close to the style these games present. F-Zero. No other racing games comes close to making you feel like you are going hundreds of miles per hour. The sense of speed goes unmatched. Punch Out. Very few other games combine sports and puzzle the way this game does. Mortal Kombat for making rumors created by fans actual reality in later installments. Timesplitters for being super quirky with its characters and levels.
Myth 2 Soulblighter.
One of the greatest strategy games in history and outside of the Myth series there isn't anything else like it. This is truly a great game.
Not counting the sequels of the last two games of course.
Good thread. But must every good thread be overtaken by Spamming posts?? Jesus...
Anyways....no game gave me the scares that Resident Evil 4 had. But it’s a one and done deal. I wish there would be direct sequel. I’m playing Mercenaries on the 3DS right now and I feel like it’s a really good game. I’m doing the missions as of now. (Is there anything else to do in the game??)
Call of duty, it is absolutely groundbreaking and a first of its kind. Each yearly release they come up with some new incredible ideas that keep the franchise fresh and keep the consumers guessing what is coming next. No 2 games are remotely alike.

LOL. Love the irony.
Although IMO, Call of Duty: 4 Modern Warfare is the best First-person-shooter of all time. And arguably in the top 5 best games ever. And no, I'm not being ironic nor do I still play COD games.
Crusader Kings franchise, Civilization franchise...
I was going to mention the Civilization franchise. Civilization IV and V are just true masterpieces.
Jet Set Radio and Future. There hasn't been another game like it nor anything that seems to rival it. Everything about the game was just unique: the music using either not really known bands or its own music that sounds like it wasn't developed with a mindset of creating music for a game, the characters and each having their own distinct personality, the gameplay, and the story, especially in Future as it had some interesting twists. I know about that other game that is being developed that is like it, but only time will tell if it can stand toe to toe with this series.
