What old games have you recently played that can still measure up to games Today

Lately, I have been playing Star Wars: Jedi Knights 2: Jedi Outcasts, and I have been finding it a blast to play. Although the graphics certainly don't stand up to those of Uncharted 2, they are serviceable enough, and there are some other differences compared to today's games, but in quite a few other ways, I find it to be better than some of the games of today. I find the AI to be a lot better than some of the AI of some contemporary games, and the gameplay to be really fun. It is like getting a blast of fresh air from a dusty coffin. Some of the gameplay mechanics have really never been reinvented in other later games, and that keeps the action original and fun,despite being an old game. The online play is still fun, and the weapons still good. I still never get tired of using Kyle Katarn's extensive amount of force powers to kill my enemies in a variety of sadistic ways. I'm wondering if any of you feel the same way as me, or if I'm alone in the world of yesterday.

Diablo 2

KOTOR is still one of the greats.

I didn't see this as I made a thread about this too. I'm playing FF VII for the first time and sure is addictive.

I'd say Halo : CE, and Doom 3. Every once in a while, I'll get out the old xbox, and play 'em. I think they compare to new games very well in gameplay. Graphics are another ballgame of course.

Do you mean measure up as in all of the game's aspects? e.g. Graphics, controls, game play etc? Because if we go like that most people who are going to be spewing out stuff like games that were in the middle of the road (FF VII, OoT) are going to be heavily reliant on their opinion, not the actual objective factors. In reality, neither of those games have aged well. :?

The punisher. I know it's not that old but it's old enough, right? It's a kick ass game! But I doubt there will be any sequels... it's a shame punisher is liked by so few...

Warcraft III, Age of Empires III, Spyro 1,2, and 3, and Halo 1 from the back of my mind.

I think Sim City 4 and Warcraft III still hold up great today.

Civ 2 is still awesome, probably better than the later versions if I'm honest.

I just finished FFIX again last night. I think that was the last great RPG that Square or SquareEnix made. I never understood how XII got such high scores.
If any one feels like playing F 7,8, or 9 again, you should play em on the latest version of ePSXE with Petes's plugins. They have the emulation pretty much down perfectly, plus all of the post processing you can apply really make it much more pleasing to the eyes than good ol' PS1.

Metal Slug, the artstlye and animations are still top notch. The gameplay is fast and fluid and the game is challenging as long as your not one of those credit feeders. As far as music is concerned a lot of it isn't very memorable, but it fits the game. For music I'm strictly talking about the first Metal Slug as some of the sequels have very memorable music (deserts of arabia I'm looking at you).

Dark Cloud 2, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Legendia, Tales of Symphonia, Tony Hawk's Underground, Sonic Adventure...All of these games are so much better than anything on the 360, PS3 or Wii. What the hell happened to amazing games like these?

I've been playing ESPN NFL 2K5. Such a good game. I'd rather play it than Madden sometimes.

Banjo Kazooie on XBLA.

Metroid Prime 1 & 2. I can't get over how good these games are, especially 2. It's a downright masterpiece, a work of art, and especially now that I've played it on the Wii, there are just no shooter-based games that come close, except maybe Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.

Also Paper Mario. I beat it on the VC about a month ago, and it still was every bit as good as I remembered it to be. The graphics do look dated, especially in comparison to its sequels, but the artistic approach prevents the graphics from looking ugly.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! also has stunning graphics for its time, that still fare very well today. The Mario Kart gameplay is timeless, of course.

I completely agree. Granted that I didn't play it when it came out for the GameCube, but when I played Metroid Prime Trilogy, I couldn't help but think to myself "This is a damn good 5-yr old game." It's definitely stood the test of time.

They all pretty much hold up to the test of time. They've all aged very well
