Here's some things I think should be eliminated from games altogether. Any time these things come up, I usually end up turning off a game and never playing it again.

1. Infinitely respawning enemies: For god's sake when I clear an area let me be done with it! I end up feeling like all that hard work was for nothing!

2. Time limit on finishing the game: When I started playing Dead Rising and then saw that I had a time limit in which to finish the game, I turned it off and never played it again.

3. Fetch quests: I'm not a dog. Don't send me around to hunt for and fetch things when they serve no purpose other than artificially lengthening the game.

So those are my ideas. Can anyone think of others?

Quick Time Events. They worked in Shenmue, but that's about it.

Ungodly long cutscenes. Sure, you can skip them, but then you're left with half-baked gameplay segments, and more often than not, your next objective is revealed near the end of the cutscene.

I'm going to have to disagree on quick time events. Don't you think they worked quite well in God of War and Resident Evil 4?

Time limit for sure (except fighting games)

I like to WALK in my adventure games, to get full mood effect going. But noooooo. Capcom always makes me rush or I won't unlock all the goodies and get bad rating.

Let me play on my own pace damn it.

And as much as I LOOOOOVE cut scenes (I mean I LOOOOVE cut scenes), all cut scenes should be skippable.

None really. As long as it's done well and fits the game then I have no problem with any feature. For example the QTEs in Resident Evil 4 and God of War were really well done and very enjoyable. The time limit in Dead Rising fit the game perfectly and didn't stop one at all from finishing the game but simply affected it's outcome. Also I've played plenty of games with fetch quests and doing them can be quite fun and rewarding in their own sense.

the enemy respawning in NGS annoyed me to no end. I understand why they have them but for god sakes they should let to travel from one screen to the next w/o having to face the same enemy every single time. Especially when you're jus trying to explore an area you've already cleared.

LIVES. The same goal can be accomplished with checkpoints, and having to start a level over just because you lost all your lives is sort of a slap in the face.

Checkpoints- every game should be save anywhere anytime, respawning enemys, quicktime events and the entire JRPG genre.

Not being able to skip cutscenes. I hate losing to a boss and then having to watch the whole cutscene again or if I just feel like playing a mission again I have to watch a 5 minute cutscene before I play.

As soon as I read the title I wanted to come in and say Dead Rising, for it's pointless time limit. That put a damper on the experience for me, BIG time.

I can live with and live without JRPG formula where enemies on the next dungeon or level skip in increments of five. It's like you finish the first level of a dungeon moving on to the second and BAM! Enemies 5 levels higher than you. Takes an hour or two just to be on par with their skills. I wouldn't mind if it were eliminated, but also what makes the game so fun.

Nice thread.

I dont have a list of my own, but most of the aforementioned features should be extinct by now.

1. Regenerating health - I still prefer looking/carrying/equiping health packs or med kits or whatever thing that replenishes the health.

2. Save points (in adventure games) - it's an adventure, so we must be able to save anytime anywhere and it should also load EXACTLY where we saved (of course except during battles).

3. Add ons that needs to be purchased especially if it's just a costume/skin - why pay another $5-10 just for a costume? IMO...non-free add ons should change the gameplay even the slightest, like a costume that has a special ability. :D

Unskippable cutscenes for sure. But something I'd like to see in more games is the ability to pause cutscenes. Let's say you're watching a long cutscene then the phone rings, or you hear a doorbell. What are you supposed to do? I'd like to have the ability to pause, fast forward, and rewind cutscenes so we don't miss anything.

The ability NOT to customize the controls. There's no excuse, we should be able to customize the controls to our liking as not everyone will like the same control scheme.

That's like saying TBS games should all be phased out in favor of RTS. It's a genre all its own. Anyway, most RPGs these days are real-time. Even Final Fantasy has moved away from it.

Some stuff that I hate to experience on videogames:

-Unbalanced difficulty: games that start much too difficult or rather continue being much too easy once you've progressed significantly aren't much that worth.

-Non-modifiable control schemes: I WANT TO PLAY THE VIDEOGAME, NOT FIGURE MY WAY AROUND THE BASIC CONTROLS!!

-Non-skippable loading/introduction/presentation screens when you fire up the games: I'm losing valuable gaming time.

The first two I totally totally agree with! Alhough I used to play WoW so I quite like the fetching quests lol. Also, games in which you cannot alter the difficulty level without restarting the whole game are idiotic.

Respawning enemies *CALL OF DUTY COUGH COUGH*

Time-limit games

INK RIBBONS *but these have been eliminated ;)

and I believe in every action adventure game, there should be a "mega man 64 dodge" Cause in some games, its dumb how immobile your character is.

1. Pop-ups informing you of achievements

2. Invulnerable bosses with one weak spot (aim for the flashing red spot on his head!). This should have never left the 16-bit era.

3. Designated save spots

4. Annoying one-liners repeated endlessly through the whole game

Hard modes that do nothing to improve enemy AI but instead rely on cheap tactics such as infinite spawning enemies, more damage dealt with their guns, psychic AI in cover mechanics, seeing in the dark, echolocation and the list goes on and on

UNLOCKABLES. Especially those that are core parts of games. I'm not talking about extra fancy guns in FPS games where the game can be enjoyable without it. I'm talking about courses in driving games or teams in sports games that you want to play right out of the box. Games are expensive...imagine having to watch the full movie on a DVD before unlocking the special features.

So you like games where you can adjust the difficulty like in Oblivion or Mass Effect. Yeah, I'd like that in every game as well.

I agree with that one. I don't like it when a harder difficulty simply means that the enemy's weapons do more damage and become more accurate. I like how halo handles higher difficulties, meaning that the AI actually gets smarter at higher difficulties.

I don't know what that's from, but I was thinking about those bits of dialogue that play whenever you do a certain action, which get old quick because you end up doing that thing a hundred times, like talking to the merchant in Resident Evil 4.

Infinitely Respawn enemies-its annoying..go play a Call of Duty game to see what I am talking about.. Overdone QTE's-seriously RE4's and God of War's QTE's were incredible...but now its like monkey see..monkey due nowadays. (looks at Heavenly Sword) Random battles in RPG's-with todays technology this needs to go away asap
