Back when I had Windows 95 (life was much simpler back then) I had a fighting game called Expect No Mercy. It was based on a film that I'd not heard of and it was pretty OTT on the violence front. The game was so bad though, and cheesy, it's worth playing. :)

MK cheesy?
It was dead serious when we were kids:

But looking past the violence and atmosphere, it was a rather shallow fighter.
I hold a similar opinion about Carmageddon and Postal which I consider fun but not actually good games, if you take out the violence.
Solder of Fortune, however, I consider a good game due to good level design and enjoyable gunplay. (the first one, the second was much worse in the level design, gunplay and difficulty curve departments)
Time Killers and it's psuedo-sequel Bloodstorm. 2d weapon based fighters where you could win the match in one hit if you took the other guy's head off. You could also remove arms and (in Bloodstorm) legs.

Mortal Kombat was never meant to be cheesy. They were dead serious. Do you guys remember the ads?

They included friendships and babalities as a counter-measure for the violence.
But back then MK was quite controversial, true.
It even triggered a political debate in the US government about banning violent games and formed the ESRB game rating body.
Nintendo even censored the SNES version.
These days, violence in games is something normal but back then it was quite a new experiece to rip out realistic-looking people's heads with spine in a video game. ;)
Relevant to the thread Some of these games look really bad, but probably fun for a little bit. I didn't know Eternal Champions had fatalaties.Â
Note: During the first minute or so when the games are listed you can click the name to skip right to it.
Oh yeah, almost forgot about Splatterhouse, the big daddy of ultra-violent video games.Splatterhouse was probably the 1st really violent game that I remember and I'm relatively certain that it was the one that started it all.

I think it was the first arcade game to be banned in North America too.

That was a memorable one. But there were others before it. Custer's Revenge is a game on Atari 2600 where you rape an Native American girl that's tied to a cactus.
Smash TV is both cheesy ("I'd buy that for a dollar!") and over-the-top violent. I dread to think what the body count is in the first level. I love that game.
Along w/ just about everyone else in the universe, I was wild about the Mortal Kombat games when they first came out. I also have fond memories of gunning down school children in the first couple Grand Theft Auto games. I dunno if either of these are cheesy but definitely over the top.

I think he's referring to over-the-top violence, not rape... although one might argue that rape is a type of violent crime. Still, it's pretty interesting that the first rape game was made in America rather than the usual suspect (Japan).cheesy and violent games: Metroid: Other M, Resident Evil Code: Veronica
just flat out, over the top cheesy: Oh, I don't know. How bout every single Dead or Alive game?
[QUOTE="Emerald_Warrior"]This.God of War games, without a doubt. So incredibly over-the-top violent. And it's so well polished.

True Lies for the Genesis. Yea the Arnold Swartzenegger movie. The game was awesome. Dino Crysis (I loved them but they were violent and retarded).
Foulcry
What was 'retarded' about "Dino"?
