Which Dreamcast games are the must-have for the system?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
1. Bangai-O
2. Mars Matrix
Then, in no particular order:
Border Down
Under Defeat
Ikaruga
Jet Grind Radio
Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate
Rez
Marvel vs. Capcom
Triggerheart Exelica
My personal top 10:
Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament were fantastic and back in the day would have been at the top of this list. But since it's multiplayer only and kind of useless online nowadays (unless you're still using a 56k modem, lol) it would be ridiculous to add them in 2011.
I'm almost exclusively an RPG and SHMUP gamer, so excuse me if my list isn't overly diverse:
But here are my ten favorite DreamCast games:
*and as someone pointed out already "SEGA SMACH PACK" was a great value back then, with phantasy star II, shining force, altered beast, sonic, vectorman and so forth on it (though at this point, there have been far superior sega collections produced)
1. Shenmue
2. Ikaruga (import only)
3. Marvel vs. Capcom 2
4. Bangai-O
5. Power Stone
6. Sonic Adventure
7. Sega Marine Fishing
8. House of the Dead 2
9. Resident Evil Code Veronica
10. Dead or Alive 2
These are the top ten games I've personally played on the Dreamcast, I'm sure there are some more out there that would definitely make the list.
Here are some of my favorites In no particular order - and it's hard to limit to 10
- perhaps take the top 10 and call all the others "Honorable Mentions" :)
Soul Calibur
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
Ferrari F355 Challenge
Ecco the Dolphin
Skies of Arcadia
Ready to Rumble
Marvel vs Capcom
Marvel vs Capcom 2
DOA 2
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
Gauntlet Legends
Hydro Thunder
San Francisco Rush 2049
Re-Volt
Slave Zero
Speed Devils
Spider-Man
Tricks.t.y.l.e (had to put periods due to 'forbidden html')
Zombie Revenge
in no certain order
1 . Virtua Fighter 3tb
2. Dead Or Alive 2
3. Shenmue 2
4. Shenmue
5. Street Fighter 3 3rd strike (Alpha 3 is better, but the DC port is kinda meh)
6. Resident Evil 3
7. Crazy Taxi
8. Sega Rally 2
9. Capcom Vs SNK 2
10. Resident Evil Code Veronica.
I only played a played a few Dreamcast games since I never owned the system(might change that one day). Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue were great though. And I had fun with Power Stone on Soul Calibur. Great games on Dreamcast I played on other systems: Grandia II, Ikaruga, Rayman2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Shenmue 2, Skies of Arcadia
From the 15 i have, i can name you the absolute top 5 i've considered after checking this incredibly good system out:
Capcom vs. SNK 2: Fight of the Millenium (bigger, more improved visuals)
Soul Calibur (the absolute fighting game, its perfection in every way)
Garou: Mark of the Wolfes ( greatest 2D fighting game of all times)
Street Fighter 3rd Strike (2nd greatest fighting game of all times)
Shenmue (best story on 6th - 7th gen consoles, ever told)
my top 10
1 test drive 6
2 sonic adventure
3 jet grind radio
4 gta 2
5 tony hawks 2
6 dave mira 2
7 rainbow six
8 baseball 2k1
9 nfl football 2k1
10 this one is a game with a jet plane its like topgun forgot the name so ya
I never played Rainbow 6 on the Dreamcast. I've played the rest on that list and they were all pretty good. I may need to check out R6, I've always loved the series.my top 10

UT99 is still ftw on the PC! :) My list: Shenmue Crazy Taxi Soul Calibur Sonic Adventure 2 Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Unreal Tournament Street Fighter III - Third Strike Capcom vs. SNK - Millennium Fight 2000 Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage Dead or alive 2My personal top 10:
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Resident Evil 2 & Resident Evil 3 are both great too and I recommend getting them if you don't have the PSX or Gamecube versions, but 1 RE game is enough for a top 10 list, and RE:CV was exclusive to Dreamcast at the time)
- The Record of Lodoss War
- Marvel vs. Capcom
- Soul Calibur
- Spider-Man
- House of the Dead 2
- Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm
- Sega Smash Pack (Does this count? Because I love a good compilation, and when this baby came out it blew me away)
- The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
- Vigilante 8: Second Offense
Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament were fantastic and back in the day would have been at the top of this list. But since it's multiplayer only and kind of useless online nowadays (unless you're still using a 56k modem, lol) it would be ridiculous to add them in 2011.

I have 10 - No Particular Order -
You'll like the last two, especially!
;)
(PS - "Toy Commander" looks like my kinda GAME!!!)
"Unreal" on the DC is still worth it for the 'bot matches if you like the game. My opinion. Yours may vary, but I still play it.
Resident Evil Code Veronica
D2
Sonic Adventure 2
Rez
soul calibur
Space channel 5
Armada
Jet Grind Radio
Half Life Gold [Not Officialy released]
MDK2
This is making me want a dreamcast. :P

Yeah... Makin' me wanna plug mine back in. It's right over in the closet. Great system full of some great games. Still kicking yself for not buying "Sea Man" back in the day when I saw it cheap. That was back when people took weird chances in gaming a little more often! I consider the DC to be one of the pinnacles of electronic entertainment.

from my point of view, the Dreamcast is a great, but overrated system. reason being that the general gaming media treats it as God's console, finding basically no flaws in it, and almost worshipping it. heck , in 2009, pretty much every major gaming website I saw, gave the DC a "10 year anniversary" made me wonder "where is the anniversary for the Saturn? where is the anniversary for the TG16? where is the anniversary for the Neo Geo? where is the anniversary for the Master System?" I mean , by all accounts, I like the Saturn more than the DC, so I personally don't see why the showers of praiseI've played about 150, including all the big ones
pretty much in order:
shenmue 2
shenmue
rush2049
tokyo highway challenge 2
jet set radio
skies of arcadia
metropolis street racer
d2
resident evil code veronica
dead or alive 2/soul calibur
honorable mentionings: toy commander, power stone 2, propellor arena(no official release but it's out there) and virtua tennis 2. if you have friends then these games are one of the best on dreamcast
phantasy star online. offline not as great anymore but it should be mentioned that back in the day a game couldn't be better or more addicitng almost as this one. buy it to own a huge piece of gaming history

Now THAT is a list. Not that others are bad, but this is a diverse list of great games. Personally, if it came down to 10 games, I think I'd have to replace DOA2 with SF3rdStrike. DC had a small library, but a great one.

I hate the DC controller. Does that help ease the pain?
:)
It's far from perfect, but I do like the system, and I never owned a Saturn - The DC spread a bit further a little quicker than those other systems. The Neo Geo was a tech triumph that priced itself out of the game (so to speak)... I think the widespread nature of the DC, that a bunch of people OWNED it, makes it different than those others. My opinion, of course. But here in the US, the Saturn never really gained a hold on the market the way the DC did, albeit for a short amount of time.

its not about wheter people like the console more , its the fact it gets more attention than other systems which are just as good, and in some ways better. the difference between the DC and the Saturn or TG16 though , is that the latter consoles were more popular in Japan than in the US or Europe, while the DC was a bit more popular in the US (at least somewhat). the Master System has a similar issue in that it was very popular in Europe, but not much else, and so unless youre reading a European publication , the Master System will be forgotten. but the hype is still crazy, actually the reason I got a DC was because of the hype. in fact on IGN , the editor said "the Dreamcast had a much better library than the Saturn" , so I thought "ok , lets see" , this was a few years ago. so I get the system , expecting it to blow my Saturn away. you know what? it didn't , which made me wonder what that editor knew about the Saturn's library (his top 10 list was basically just the most known games) in case youre wondering though , the Saturn and DC are actually quite similar, , just the Saturn in my opinion has a better game library, and more RPGs as far as I can see. also there is obviously graphics , but thats to be expected considering the DC was 4 year newer.dreamcast was the best system ever made during it's release. it was graphically most revolutionary and I had one since launch and will never forget it.
personally saturn has better games but it's not for everyone while dreamcast is. I never meat anyone who I showed the dreamcast and didn't fall in love with it.

I go back and fourth on this. It is hard to dispute the diversity and quality of the Dreamcasts library. Personally I care far more about quality than quantity. I think a lot of the love it gets boils down to how the system was handled/marketed. One, it was very affordable with a $199.99 launch price. Two, the launch games were exceptional. Three, the library kept getting better and more diverse. So, I think people love it for those reasons, especially if you contrast that with the PS2, which banked off the love of the psx and brought a library full of filler and enhanced psx games. I'm not saying the ps2 was all terrible, but the dc was a true gamers console in that it had just about EVERY base covered.

I've been chipping away at my electronic ethnocentrism when considering the history and evolution of video games, but I'm not done yet.
:)
After Atari and Mattel did their dance, the next "conflict" in gaming really arrived after the NES here in the US with Genesis and SNES, and after that it was the disc-based systems that made the next big play with advertising, and blather to create product recognition. I don't really remember Saturn ever being pushed, and I didn't have anyone in my circle who owned one. Not that they were mythical beasts, but systems like Neo Geo, the Saturn... We who read computer mags and frequented the local arcade knew about them, but the mainstream had no clue.
People tend to laud & praise the DC because it's an experience more people had together than those other systems. I agree with you that there should be some equal trumpets sounded for the Neo Geo and it's likewise-shadowed ilk, but perhaps the press is looking to connect with as many people as possible in a pleasing way so that the masses get fuzzies and then frequent the publication, website, or advertisers there-in more often?
:)
Stop me when I sound cynical.
But while I admire the history and effect on the gaming zeitgeist the Neo Geo had, others would call me Poindexter and shove me to the ground, figuratively or literally...
... If I was to expound upon the subject at a bus stop, say...
... So when considering the angle at least from the standpoint of popular media, that might be one reason.
I have learned more than I thought I ever would from this website because of posts by learned folks such as yourself, Darkman, but you well-know where a lot of people sort of glaze over or shut down when something new or challenging to pick apart and ponder comes at 'em... So instead they just shove it to the ground.
And no one likes being shoved to the ground.
I remember being wowed by a lot of things I've seen as this hobby evolves that no one ever talks about. And perhaps you're onto something, perhaps people should be made aware of some of these unsung consoles and their contributions or achievements... Not go quietly into that good night, but rage against the dawn...

Im not arguing the DC was a good console, heck I think its a great system , especially considering it was on the market (for the most part) for 3 years,. however, imo , the Saturn has a game library thats just as good if not better in some ways, disagree if you want , but thats my opinion. I mean , they are similar, but to me the Dreamcast feels like a noisy Saturn with better graphics but worse games overall. thing is, while the Saturn has hardly mentioned in the mainstream gaming press , and when it does , its usually in a somewhat negative light (usually with the phrases "its expensive" , the 3D is rubbish" or "complex system" thrown in) and again , I could point out quite a few cases of bias in game reviews against Saturn games at the time, and even some modern retro reviews Ive seen. see the issue, the DC gets basically worshipped while the Saturn , TG16 etc are not (not that I want them to be, but these consoles should get equal coverage, especially as they all sold similar numbers of consoles)[QUOTE="Darkman2007"] its not about wheter people like the console more , its the fact it gets more attention than other systems which are just as good, and in some ways better. the difference between the DC and the Saturn or TG16 though , is that the latter consoles were more popular in Japan than in the US or Europe, while the DC was a bit more popular in the US (at least somewhat). the Master System has a similar issue in that it was very popular in Europe, but not much else, and so unless youre reading a European publication , the Master System will be forgotten. but the hype is still crazy, actually the reason I got a DC was because of the hype. in fact on IGN , the editor said "the Dreamcast had a much better library than the Saturn" , so I thought "ok , lets see" , this was a few years ago. so I get the system , expecting it to blow my Saturn away. you know what? it didn't , which made me wonder what that editor knew about the Saturn's library (his top 10 list was basically just the most known games) in case youre wondering though , the Saturn and DC are actually quite similar, , just the Saturn in my opinion has a better game library, and more RPGs as far as I can see. also there is obviously graphics , but thats to be expected considering the DC was 4 year newer.MonkeySpot

well like I said about the numbers of people , the sales figures for the Saturn and Dreamcast were similar, its just that while alot of the Saturn's sales came from Japan and Asia, most of the DC's sales came from the US and Europe (in Japan it wasn't anywhere near as successful as the Saturn was). in light that most gaming publications are from the US or Europe (at least the ones the average western gamer reads) , it makes sense the DC gets more attention. thing is though , the press was very biased against the Saturn at the time, as Ive said a number of times, I can find plenty of bias and factual mistakes in plenty of Saturn reviews from the time.I have no doubt that the Saturn was almost de-emphisized in the media here. A virtual non-entity in gaming mags at the time. And I'm certain they ignored a quality system. The wiki game list tells ya that.

here is a more modern example I found about a year ago , GS did a video about the Saturn (you can find it on youtube if you want)
in it, one of the people complains about the Saturn's RAM expansion (basically saying it was pointless) , despite it being useful and a number of games (some of them the best on the system)
of course the exact same person originally did the GS review for Rogue Squadron on the N64, where praises the N64 RAM expansion by saying how much better the visuals are with it.
so....the N64 expansion is great, while the Saturn one sucks, even if they both serve a similar purpose??
there was also IGN and Gamespot saying Dead Or Alive on the PS1 looked "much better" than the Saturn version (which is not true, and I can post screenshots to prove so) , in fact the IGN review said "we suspect Sega would be in a much better position if they just made Playstation games" (this review is from 1998 )
there is also the Burning Rangers review Gamespot, where despite the actual review praising the game , the final score is a 6.2 ...........
and of course there is the Last Bronx review which claims the game is the same as Virtua Fighter (not quite true) and says "the graphics are good.....for the Saturn".
then there is the Deep Fear review which claims the visuals are as good/bad as the Saturn version of Resident Evil (again , untrue and I can post screenshots to prove)
then you get the Grandia review on the PS1, where GS actually said the PS1 version looked better than the Saturn original (again not true, I can prove it, also the PS1 version has slowdown)
then you get Fifa 98 which made me wonder if they even played the Saturn version , because they liked it, despite it being absolutly awful .
there is also that wierd claim in the Dreamcast review of Street Fighter Alpha 3, claiming the DC version is perfect, its not, the Saturn version actually looks and plays better, and again I can prove it.
yeah , this could go on and on

well like I said about the numbers of people , the sales figures for the Saturn and Dreamcast were similar, its just that while alot of the Saturn's sales came from Japan and Asia, most of the DC's sales came from the US and Europe (in Japan it wasn't anywhere near as successful as the Saturn was). in light that most gaming publications are from the US or Europe (at least the ones the average western gamer reads) , it makes sense the DC gets more attention. thing is though , the press was very biased against the Saturn at the time, as Ive said a number of times, I can find plenty of bias and factual mistakes in plenty of Saturn reviews from the time.dreamcast sold worldwide 10 million consoles in 3 years, while saturn took 10 million sales worldwide in 4 years. keep in mind that dreamcast in it's most succesful markets was only in production for one and a half year, while saturn in japan was out for 4 years. dreamcast was way more succesful than saturn. sega's true financial losses came during saturn days and not the dreamcast days but by then it was too late

I have no doubt that the Saturn was almost de-emphisized in the media here. A virtual non-entity in gaming mags at the time. And I'm certain they ignored a quality system. The wiki game list tells ya that.

here is a more modern example I found about a year ago , GS did a video about the Saturn (you can find it on youtube if you want)
in it, one of the people complains about the Saturn's RAM expansion (basically saying it was pointless) , despite it being useful and a number of games (some of them the best on the system)
of course the exact same person originally did the GS review for Rogue Squadron on the N64, where praises the N64 RAM expansion by saying how much better the visuals are with it.
so....the N64 expansion is great, while the Saturn one sucks, even if they both serve a similar purpose??
there was also IGN and Gamespot saying Dead Or Alive on the PS1 looked "much better" than the Saturn version (which is not true, and I can post screenshots to prove so) , in fact the IGN review said "we suspect Sega would be in a much better position if they just made Playstation games" (this review is from 1998 )
there is also the Burning Rangers review Gamespot, where despite the actual review praising the game , the final score is a 6.2 ...........
and of course there is the Last Bronx review which claims the game is the same as Virtua Fighter (not quite true) and says "the graphics are good.....for the Saturn".
then there is the Deep Fear review which claims the visuals are as good/bad as the Saturn version of Resident Evil (again , untrue and I can post screenshots to prove)
then you get the Grandia review on the PS1, where GS actually said the PS1 version looked better than the Saturn original (again not true, I can prove it, also the PS1 version has slowdown)
then you get Fifa 98 which made me wonder if they even played the Saturn version , because they liked it, despite it being absolutly awful .
there is also that wierd claim in the Dreamcast review of Street Fighter Alpha 3, claiming the DC version is perfect, its not, the Saturn version actually looks and plays better, and again I can prove it.
yeah , this could go on and on
don't bother most of the media are anti-sega and especially anti-saturn, look at gamespots saturn reviews and compare them to overage read reviews, I won't take gamespot serious ever because of that

Not go quietly into that good night, but rage against the dawn...
... Where are my meds? I'm getting weird...

thats not true, Sega were losing money on the DC as well , maybe less, but its not the shining sucesss some people like to paint. and youre not quite right, Sega was actually still selling refurbished Dreamcasts for quite a while after 2001, in Japan , though Sega direct. it doesn't really matter at what rate it sold though , the end result is that they both sold around the same , so its not as though one system sold much better (when looking from a modern perspective)no it was not 450 million a year, I belive that was the total loss over the entire Saturn era. and the extra profit came mostly from a combination of Sega basically laying off a fair chunk of its workers through 1998 and 1999, Sega was a considerably smaller company in 2000 (ie less mouths to feed + somewhat better sales = profit) also , Isao Okawa, Sega's president at the time, was investing plenty of his own personal money (he was one of Japan's richest people) into Sega during the Dreamcast era, simply because they couldn't balance the books.in it's first true dreamcast year 2000 sega turned profit for first time in 4 years, a small profit yes but a day and nigth difference with losing 450 million a year in 1998 during saturn days.

thats not abnormal , the PS3 apparently cost Sony several billion dollars.dreamcast cost 650 million dollars on r&d alone, way more than satun entirely

yeah but sony had huge pockets and sega had not. 650 million dollar at that time wasn't abnormal but was a huge sum of money spend. and from 1999 on sega started doing better financial figures, of course what sega hurt amongst other things were pirating in late 2000. within 1 week the dreamcast piracy scene was bigger than that of psx
Sega was suffering from alot of things, from the decline of arcades in the west to sillly business practices. I will say the Dreamcast was wisely developed, and Sega made the right choice with the hardware (as I doubt the Blackbelt prototype wouldnt have been as good)yeah but sony had huge pockets and sega had not. 650 million dollar at that time wasn't abnormal but was a huge sum of money spend. and from 1999 on sega started doing better financial figures, of course what sega hurt amongst other things were pirating in late 2000. within 1 week the dreamcast piracy scene was bigger than that of psx
